Nice Trash Program

I have been working on a program (settings) for sometime and wanted to be sure it worked well in the field before posting. The philosophy behind the program is to work parks; school yards and other public area where there is a lot of trash that can be rejected but still maintain outstanding depth and keep the threshold from null as much as possible. There are several areas of interest that I will explain in anticipation of questions.
In looking for a good program I wanted to keep the threshold from null as much as possible. I read in the Minelab patents that 90% of all metal in the soil is iron and that was consistent with what I have read in other material. I used the learn mode to see where signals were hitting on the screen and in particular the iron. Most of the iron hit in the upper left or at what is called FE Coins. By accepting the upper left (FE) just about all null of the threshold is eliminated in my test and use in the field.
However, in the conductive tones this area, 31/31 gives a high tone. The answer to this problem is to go to the audio and set the threshold tone to 0. Unless you want to put up with a lot of false high tones then I suggest using Ferrous sounds. Threshold tone sets the lowest tone while the upper limit sets the highest tone. Set the audio gain to 4,3 or 5 if you prefer, sensitivity to 28 and here is where Manual vs Semi-auto comes into play. In manual the crosshairs jump around pretty bad in some parks or areas hunted and the digital display number flicker. Semi-auto will stop the crosshairs from jumping around and also stabilize the digital display. I use Fast ON and Deep Off but this I up to the preference of the individual as we all know. Notice that there are two black areas in the nonferrous zone. I used the learn mode to reject pulltabs and tails then accepted rings gold rings sicne silver falls at a higher conductive level there was no problem with silver rings. These setting and the pattern will also accept nickels.
With the above setting and patter we hear deep iron as a low mellow sound and shallow iron as a stronger sound. Since a high tone will sound louder than a low one to most users even if they are at the same level the deep old coin come in nice and clear over the low iron tones.
It is very easy to hunt in the Digital mode as the reading is going to be 31/31 for iron then from 16 to 0 for ferrous and 0 to 31 for conductivity. We have cut the number of tones in half and also the digital reading are now an approximate 16 X 16 grid so much easier to learn and know what is being detected. If in doubt shift to Iron Mask at -16 to see where the crosshairs indicate the target is on the grid.
I found more coins in a very old heavily detected park in one morning than had been finding in a couple of weeks using other programs. Co-located targets and over killing with the setting was actually costing me a lot of goodies. I am really excited about this program. This is really not a relic program although rejecting FE Coins will really cause the detector to constantly null over iron. The problme with Iron Mask at -15 or -14 is this area is rejected. I found it to be best to duplicated iron mask on the Smart screen and then clearn FE coins for very solid operation. In addition I can tell depth by the visual display and also the modulated sound for a target. I was impressed with the fact that I see no loss of depth with the Audio Gain at 3 to 5 on relics or in the trash areas of the park.
Hope you enjoy the program if you want to give it a try.

Good to see you posting, and I'll give your program idea a try.
Been having fun with my learned program, I went into an area adjacent ot my driveway that is chock full of junk including nuts, bolts, washers, nails, canslaw, whatzits, and other stuff coming off of the driveway. (I work on cars a lot, and do a fair amount of woodworking and such to create the mess).
In any event, in factory mode, this 3x3 foot area is a mass of nulls, chirps and thunks, a complete mess.
With the new program and slow sweeps, I lifted a nickle from about 5 inches, and a penny that was literally in contacy with some sort of steel ring, with a brass nut and a steel #6 washer all withing 2 inches or less.
Having faith, I dug the signals and was rewarded with the two coins, and a glimer of hope splashed across my face that programs do in fact have their place!
Looking at your reject screen, I know the area I'm discussing would still be a mess hit wise, but I'm willing to try it just for the sake of learning. I think that's what we're here for, so thanks for the input.

I consider this to be a beta program that gives us something to try. It is working very good for me in an old park that guys gave up on 10 years ago. You can pretty much do that with the EX2 anytime but this let's me get in the really heavy trash.
It was not my intentions to leave. Our family doctor retired and we had to find a new one. We settled on a good doctor, I think, but had to do all the basic tests to establish a base for our physical conditons. This has been going on for a couple of months now. I am at the age where the diabetes can be a real problem if not monitored properly so had to get serious about exercise and eating properly. It would be very easy for me to spend all my time talking about detectors so that is one area I have to control.
I read the post and very much enjoy the questions and answers. My original intention was to help get the forum back active and then drop back and comment now and then.
Have a great evening and let me know what you see with the program. I am interested in how it works in other areas.

Cody,
I believe that a lot of the silver that I have found would have fallen in the region to the left of the white portion of the screen. Have you not found silver coins in that blacked out region when using a different setup?
HH,
Glenn

Glenn, that is a good concern and yes I have found silver in that area but not much. I frankly don't know where to suggest to a user they should set the black and clear. I thought of you when I posted the program and it seemed to me that you would use the same point as IM-10. Each person would want to set that point they think is best. The same is true for the pulltab and tail rejection.

Cody,
I understand what you are trying to do and have no objection to that. My objective was just to make people aware that there is a bit of a downside using too much discrimination.
It also think that there is some merit to going back over an area already hunted, but using a different discrimination pattern. This allows one to concentrate on a particular part of the screen. For example, one might first concentrate on the silver coins and then go back over the area looking for gold rings and old nickels.
Thanks for what you do,
Glenn

I actually have two EX2s,one with the 8" and one with the stock coil. I most often use the one with the 8" in a park and the one with the stock coil for relics.

My greatest interest was the difference in how the threshold will null if FE is open or closed. Just by keeping that area open (FE) there is almost a constant threshold no matter how the other areas are set which I did not expect. I am not seeing any null for ground minerals so far.

I started off by checked a number of targets and still check anything that sounds different. I have yet to find a coin that hits with a low tone but am sure that with the screen I posted there are going to be targets missed. That is why I started off by indicating I had used the setting for an extended period of time before posting it for this very reason. It is important to realize I don't sell settings for a living so don't care what ones are used. If I find something of interest then I post it and will alwasy be messing around with new settings as that is half the fun of the detector and hobby for me.
However, if you block IM-15 or -14 you miss most of the iron target anyway which was the primary point of my posts. IM is just another way to set a pattern so it really does not make a lot of difference as we can set a pattern to duplicate and Iron Mask pattern and do more with it in SmartScreen. I have one set in an S slot but now have FE coin accepted. Again the entire point of my post was most iorn appears to be rejected or accepted by the FE coins areas of the display clear or blocked. The point of this was how to hunt in IM or patterns and keep a threshold.
So the major reason for my post to start with and now is that FE coins open restores the threshold and from what I can see 90%, at least, of the time. What I did not expect to see was no null on soil minerals. I thought some of the nulls I saw with IM-15 and -14 were minerals since the area was so larger. A couple pices of iron in an area will blank a very larger area so I thought it was heavy minerals but could not see how based on how the Explorer kills soil minerals. I have yet to see the Explorer null on soil mineral with FE Coins accepted as it is iron that causes the null. The null on other targets with FAST ON is so quick that it is not even noticed I guess.

Quick Question for Cody --- You mention in your Mar 7 "Nice Trash Pgm" --- " I found it best to duplicate iron mask on the smart screen and then learn FE coins for very solid operation" Are you saying that I should duplicate the iron mask, then use the SELECT for the FE to be "learned" or use the learn with an actual coin? Thanks Fred D.

I was thinking about knocking out Fe coins on my regular setting of IM -14. (duplicated of course) My question is wanting to know how noisey the iron will become. I figure I know the answer as any nulling will turn to noise with Fe coins knocked out but I figured I'd ask. I'm talking conductive of course.

I intended to relate the upper left that is accepted to FE Coins. I used learn to reject tabs and tails and then learn gold rings. I am playing around with how wide and long of an area for FE Coins so just used the preset thinking that users could mess around with this area to preference. I set this area with edit but it is about the same as FE coins.
I use Iron Mask at -16 to check the crosshairs when there is an iffy target and to pinpoint if needed.

In conductive you get high tones for FE coins and unless the Audio Gain is down to about 3 or 4 it could be a lot of low tone with a strong audio for shallow iron. It might work OK with the Audio Gain at 3 or 4 but I did not like to hear the iron at FE coins with a high tone even if the readings on digital screen are pretty much 31/31. Ferrous was the answer and what made it work for me. I am like a kid with a new toy and have really being having a lot of fun now that I am past the constant null of the threshold unless I use IM -15 or -14.
I have a pattern with the rejected area the same as IM-15 but FE open and it is a very nice hot program with a good solid threshold. I would think of this as an ALL PRO setting that has ultra depth. I am not sure any detector can touch the Explorer at this setting. The only way to beat it is going to IM-16 and kicking the audio gain up to 10 then I am sure that pretty much is maximum for the technology we have today.
