Nice Hunt Before The Rain

Sooper Dave

Well-known member
I got out Friday evening to get a hunt in before the rain moved in. I went to an area close to the house that I go to often, and door knocked at a house built in the late 1800's. There is some great people here that love history and appreciate the hobby, they love to talk about days gone by and places that used to be around. I have to be careful not to spend my whole time talking, but it is great research that is just handed to you. I stayed in the front yard with my 6x8 SEF in TTF. I ended up with a handful of clad, 11 Wheats, 1917s Merc, 1910 & 1911 V Nickels, and an 1898 Indian. I love local tokens, but this one is falling to pieces. I have found many different types of CW lead in other yards in the area, this is my first Williams Cleaner, and was happy to see it in the plug! As I was hunting I had two neighbors come by at different times and talk about the hobby and give me permission to look around their places. One of the guys showed me a Minnie Ball and a UCV token he found on the surface at his place  The square nails were given to me by the home owner, he told me they came out of an old church that was being torn down. They told me to come back and hunt anytime, and would like to show me some of the old stuff they have collected over the years. It's nice to be able to share the passion for history and for the hobby. HH David

Man, that is a lot of loot and relics ya got there Dave!! Heck, them old Libertys are really decent shape !! Id definitely stay in touch with those nice people!! Wish everyone could be like them.

A great bunch of finds !

Great bunch of finds. Your places sound very similar to what I'm doing, except we don't have the CW factor added in. It's always an advantage when the people are nice and interested in what you're doing. I'll be watching to see what else you pull from those sites. Good luck.

thats what makes this hobby truly great, an appreciation of history.

Went out on Sunday afternoon after a whole day of rain on Saturday. Didn't find much but managed an 1891 Indian and a very neat gold plated button with a Tiger Eye stone in the center. HH David

You had a few really good hunts. I think I would be almost as excited about finding that bullet as I would be about finding a silver coin. I envy you having targets like that available. Congrats. One question though, how do you shoot your pictures, i.e. what kind of lighting? My 1880 Indian head penny is about that same color of green, but you can't hardly tell it in my pictures. Are your photos taken in natural light?

Thanks. It's exciting to see a CW bullet in the plug. To think the last person to touch it was a soilder from the Civil War, is awesome!
I shot these photos outside on the porch while it was raining. A lot of good natural light. My camera does not do very well in low light. And that pretty green on those Indians can be hard to pick up in a photo.
