A friend of mine drove up today hoping he could learn a few things about his explorer. Last year he was asking me about metal detectors, what brand I liked, where he should look. ect.. He ended up buying a Minelab SE from kellyco. I felt kind of bad tho because he has been having some problems learning the machine.. There Is a couple guys he hunts with that always seem to pick up a few silver coins when they head out. He was getting a little discouraged so I told him if he was willing to drive an hour to see me, I couldn't promise anything but I would show him what I know.
So we met up and hit the park... Right away I picked up on he was moving way to fast, coil was too high off the ground... and he was being way to picky about his signals.. Which I understand,, the main guy he hunts with uses a whites Luckily my first hit of the day was a text book deep silver dime.. I called him over to listen.. He admitted that he would have passed the target for the way the cursor jumped back and for from left to right. I pointed out how it favored the right hand side, and when we pin pointed the cursor seemed to flutter to the top right side of the screen. I gave my lecture on how the deeper targets are not going to have a perfect target ID. He needed to trust his ears more than anything. After spending a few moments letting him sweep the target.. I was praying to myself that it was indeed a silver dime so I didn't look like an idiot So I dug down and sure enough popped out a nice little silver Merc He was flabbergasted, Started wondering how many coins he has passed over... I spent the next 4 hours finding deep hits calling him over to listen.. I ended up with two Mercs, a silver thimble, silver ring, a silver sand dollar charm, a religious medallion, a 1905 Indian, and a few wheat's.. He seemed to pick up things because he was able to find two silver Roosevelt dimes himself plus a couple wheat's.. It was definitely fun being able to share a little knowledge to a buddy. Especially seeing the look of excitement when he hit a deep coin
I do have a question tho.. The religious charm has a date of 1830... But seems to be made of aluminum or some sort of soft metal. Possible a fake date?? Idk if anyone has any input I will gladly take it!!
Thanks everyone!
