Nice coin with Detech 7" coil, Silver Canadian 5 cent

Old California

New member
Wasn't expecting the first coin with 7" Detech coil to be from Canada, nice 1893 silver 5 cent piece.

City removed a slab of cement down town, small patch but enough to find a few pieces. Using the MX Sport with 7" Detech coil, This was the first coin with using the small detech 7" coil.

Was surprised, thought had a 1/2 dime but after seeing cent knew right there it was Canadian. Sure enough, 1893 Canadian silver 5 cent piece.

Thanks for looking,
Paul

Thanks El,

Yes, it was from my town about 75 Yard's from the original main Street. Town dates back to mid 1850's.

A sight for sore eye's, been while digging an old Canadian Coin and a first 5 cent to boot. Normally, old silver from Canada are 10 cent pieces.

Thanks El!

My reasoning for getting the 7" coil was for fresh water, less drag much easier to swing in water.

Turns out it is decent in trash, and great for all day hunting even out in open areas.

Take care,
Paul

Paul - glad to see you are putting some miles on that coil. We just released the 13" as well, though for the types of areas you hunt it may or may not be of use to you.

How deep was that silver? We have been getting good field reports on the 7" in terms of depth but would like to hear what you think about it.

I do love small coils, when the mood strikes....it's one of those things a guy almost has to be trained to do and forget about covering so much ground. They work so well and are so accurate it's fun to use one,no matter the machine or brand.
I think that 5c is referred to as a "fish scale" because they're so small. I've also got one,1903. Very cool find!

Heading out to Utah this weekend. What settings you find work best on the Sport in high minerialized soils?

Hello Tom,

Depth is very good for it's 7" size, especially out in open areas one can increase insensitivity pretty high. The Canadian silver 5 cent piece was not that deep, dug it at a local demo with a short Window to detect the area. By the time I came across the site, only had two days of detecting before they paved over the area.

Did get another Coin the next day, 1905 v-nickel and a few other old finds. I'm liking the 7" coil for fresh water and out in open terrain searching for lost settlements. Very fortunate to have access to thousands of acres of open ranch land, MX Sport is great for these type of situations.

Thanks Tom!

Thanks IDX,

Yes indeed smaller coils are fun, surprisingly one can increase sensitivity and in some cases gain back depth yet have such a lighter coil to swing.

I'm liking the 7" coil for open terrain, much more easier to swing for those all day hunts.

Thanks IDX for the fish scale information on the small Canadian Coin,
Paul

Yes, I've always been rough on my equipment. Gave up long time ago keeping my equipment clean during a hunt, spoils the fun being too careful :)

I hunt in both relic and Prospecting mode, in trashy areas use relic mode 2-tone with Sat at 7 sensitivity level based from mineralization. Sensitivity as high as possible when ground allows, sometimes as low as 3 in extremely trashy areas or in black sand. But when soil gets tough, I'll shift to Prospecting mode out in open areas.

Prospecting mode run Sat as low as possible normally between 3 and 6 depending on soil. Sensitivity level depending on mineralization, anywhere from 3 to 6 sens with Prospecting mode.

Enjoy your trip,
Paul

Thanks Paul, going to give it a try and see what pops out. Usually use coin/jewelry mode or all metal around Charleston, soil is moderate. Well accept for the beaches. Still MX Sport will work there and well in the wet or dry sand. Salt water requires beach mode and turning sensitivity down to 4 or 5. The smaller coil may be just the thing for fresh and salt water making it easier to control in the water. wish I had one for my trip.

Hello Tom,

The 7" Detech coil is no slouch on depth, it about equals the stock coil under right conditions. Smaller footprint, allows the user to increase sensitivity in the right areas.

Depth on the Canadian coin was about 4 or 5 inches, ground had been scraped so it was an easy score even underneath a ton or square nails.

Detech 13" coil sounds like a winner, you're right for my area larger coils see too much ground so it may not fare well. But those with good soil, may be a good coil for extra depth.

Thanks Tom!

Nice find on the fish scale Paul. I've found two here in Michigan but no :usaflag: 5 cent silver.
