Newly aquired CZ5

Aces High 333

New member
I thought I got shafted but I think I came out ok. The CZ5 came in with GB, Sense, and Disc controls loose. The salt/normal switch was loose and shorting. I fixed all of that plus re-soldered a loose coil jack connection. Tonight I removed the white coil cover ,it was holding sand. So here is my air test results:
autotune
sense-10
Gnd -10
Vol -10
Clad Dime air test 11.5"
Switching to Disc 0 and sense to 5 Clad dime gets good repeatable indication at 8.5". Moving sense to 7 I get a good repeatable signal at 9.5".

I like this detector. I like the feel of it and the operation of it. Who ever owned it before never registered the unit so there's no lifetime warranty  The boards reminds me of the older police radar units I use to fix. Allot easier to change IC's and other components without needing a surface mount soldering (hot air)station. This does have the metal arm rest which I understand is the old style but not the white coil. This unit does have the 5 pin coil connector.
The seller refund me $60 for my time fixing the issues. So in the end the unit cost me about $210. Tomorrow, I'm going to practice ground balancing and going through my test garden. Hopeful Saturday hit the beach early. :bouncy:
Does the detector sound like it's in good health?? Anything else to check??

Thanks, HHing,

I think you got a good deal. Glad to hear you can fix some of the problems. I suggest you learn how to ground balance using the bobbing method ( takes 20-30 seconds to do). Once you GB in auto-tune, if you are going to hunt in discriminate mode, back off the sensitivity ( which is at 9-10 when ground balancing in auto tune). Run it at discriminate setting 0 with sensitivity around 4-5 to start and if you are getting a lot of falsing on the beach, re-ground balance every so often and make sure you are not running the sensitivity too high.

If you are going to hunt in all metal ( ie, auto tune) and then when you get a signal, switch to discriminate mode, make sure you sweep VERY SLOW. You can run the sensitivity high but you have to really slow down your sweep speed when hunting this way or the machine may false a lot.

Hunting in discrim setting 0 lets you hear ALL targets and you will hear the low tone iron ID. If beach hunting, I suggest digging all targets at first until you learn the machine. DIrt hunting, if you want to cherry pick coins, only dig all repeatable high tones, but still run in discrim setting 0 so you will not be fooled by the low tone/ high tone iron bounce. If you run in discriminate setting 1 or higher, if there is a low tone/high tone bounce, you will not hear the low tone, only the high tone and will get fooled by iron.

Have fun...it's a GREAT detector and you got it at a really good price.

i have one,and love it.there never was a lifetime warranty on it.it was either 3 or 5 yrs. enjoy it. get the small and big coils.

Excellent buy, since you could get those repairs done yourself. I watched that one and almost cried when I saw what you got it for. Wished I had jumped in myself. Great deal, great rig, go get the goodies with it!

Excellent deal.

Re-read what therover says about running discriminate at 0 and how to handle running auto tune and switching to discriminate to check ... following his advice really speeds up the learning curve and improves productivity with a CZ (and they can produce very well).

Elgin Tim ,
I was surprised myself. I think the metal arm cuff and it looked like to have a white coil might have turned off some buyers.

You may be right, the white coils got a bad rap. But I think the machines were just fine. All the same I'd have still gone for if I had been home at the time so it's good you got it at a better price than if I'd been around!

But hey, I'm still waiting to find a good deal on an old CZ myself, since I have all three Fisher coils (10.5"/8"/5") from having my last two CZ's.

I have a cz6a i bought new way back when. Had fun with it and found many coins for four or five years. Retired to Florida in 04 and it has been stashed away under my bed all these years.. I'm 68 years young and have been thinking that someone could be finding their fortune with it and have wondered why I've held on to it all these years.

Good memories, Probably think of the CZ6 as an "amigo" :beers: instead of a machine.
