Newcomer Question: Finding a Target

SpencerHughes

New member
Hi gang and sorry for this newcomer's question!

Only been at it a week. Have a Garrett GTP 1350 and love it.

When I hit a target...dig a hole...and STILL don't SEE anything...do I keep digging around? In other words...is there ALWAYS something to be found if the detector is beeping loudly and clearly that there is? Are there ever false positives? Or does it just mean I am not SEEING what is there to be unearthed?

I have given up on more than a couple of holes because there just doesn't seem to be anything. But I know I am new and I could very well be missing a ring or a coin or a relic because of my lack of expertise and knowledge.

I just ordered today a Garrett Pro Pointer and can't wait to get it!! I think that will make my hunts more productive. Less time looking and more time discovering!

Thanks for any suggestions or comments!

Cheers,

Spencer

Practice pinpointing. You ain't doing it right and it's far from easy.. Tape some coins to the back of a big piece of cardboard then lay it down with the coins underneath and scan them and see if you can pinpoint them. Use something sharp to stick through the cardboard to see if you pinpointed the target correctly. Don't waste your time wildly digging random holes hoping you will find your target. It takes many hours of practice and experience.

Thanks again, Bill. It's supposed to rain pretty good next couple of days but using the indoor time to scope out potential locations.

Have a great day!

Cheers,

Spencer

Sounds like something I have to do too.
Thanks for the post.

Dig a small hole about two to three inches deep. Place a dime flat in that hole. Do not cover the hole. Pinpoint as you usually do without looking at the dime. After pinpointing see where the dime is in relation to your coil. That will be your pinpoint spot.....Jack

It doeas take a bit of practice I know!!!

Took me a few times in the field before i felt
comfortable .. trust me once you get it youll
have an easy time digging the coin with the
smallst hole you need ... and thats a good thing!

The Propointer will help a lot. I had a few of those before I got mine and since them I've found BB's, and other tiny bits of metal that I never would have found without the extra help. Good luck!

I've had a "black hole" a couple of times. One would hit like a quarter,
and pinpoint just fine. But I never could find it. I'd dig, dig, and dig around
some more.. Never did find it. But it kept hitting both ID mode, and pinpoint
just like a quarter.

Then a I tried the same hole a couple of months later, and nothing..

But this doesn't happen too often. Maybe 2-3 times so far.
I consider the pinpoint mode a pretty accurate indicator if something
is really down there. So I'm not sure what to think. And yes, I was using
a hand held pinpointer too. Normally have no trouble at all..
Sometime @#$% really happens I think..
But if you are not using a pinpointer, you are probably just missing
some stuff. Coins can cake with dirt and match the soil. And can even
be spots of rust that cause the hit.

I find BB's even with my 9x12 coil. That's one thing I like about that coil.
It's fairly large to go deeper, but it still hits on tiny stuff. So you aren't missing
anything. Well.. Unless you miss it due to cockpit error..
