Hi everyone. This is not a negative post.. It is what I hope an eye-opener post for brand new people who got
detectors for Christmas in 2013..

First let me welcome you to the hobby !!

Second - Please read your manual, do some research and learn the capabilities of your detector.

Today I saw a man at a school near my house detecting. He also had a long handled shovel dragging it around.

It was not an expensive detector, yet it would find some coins in the right circumstances.. My guess is maybe 4 or 5 " on a coin in the ground.

Now here is the problem with the guy today.. We have 8" of measured snow on the ground. He could not figure out why he wasn't finding anything.

I tried as best as I could to explain he just could not get down deep enough through the snow and Ice to hit a target unless it was something very large and deep.

He had excavated a hole about 2 feet deep at the school trying to recover a mount for the swing set post that is taken down in the winter..

I explained further about using shovels and digging and leaving holes...he listened and was happy I explained why he wasn't finding coins. He decided he would go home and read the manual..

Anyway Please all who never detected before, and got a new detector. Learn about the machine before you too get disappointed and think this is a terrible hobby.. You'll have way more fun doing it right !!

I would add - Learn your machine and recovery techniques in your own yard or families yards before venturing out to public areas.

No way is this post Negative. Elton you are dead on.
I can always tell when there is a new detector in the neighborhood.

PEOPLE, please use common sense. You are not going to find Captain Kids buried treasure chest of chucky cheese tokens buried under the slide.

If you are hunting a tot lot, 99% of the time the finds are only an inch deep or less. Make sure you leave NO holes for kids to trip over or fall into.
In the park or school yard grass, a small 4" round hole is plenty big. Then fill it in when your done. Learn some basic gardening skills.

Most entry level detectors will only see about 6" deep. Most targets will be less then that. All you need is a small hand digger or garden trowel to find your treasure.
Along with any tool you use in a public area (gun, car, boat, bow & arrow, etc) comes responsibility. Be responsible to your self and to others.

If you have to, make it a game of being able to go in, find and retrieve, and get out with out anyone being able to tell.
If you master this simple task, you will always be welcomed back.

I am a relatively new comer to the hobby. July 2012 was my first forray. Prior to starting I spent many hours reading this and other forums trying to gain information and procedures that I could use in detecting. It took a lot of searching over a lot of areas and you tube videos.

It would have been nice if there had been a forum devoted to educating the newbie. One where instructions in how to dig a plug, etc etc etc were located so that one could educate themselves without having to search far and wide.

Of course I am still learning and hope to never quit learning. The Forums have been a great help.

It is plain and simple anyone metal detecting anywhere it is what others both see and hear from each of us that truly speaks to the further of our Hobby. HH to all

I just got a new detector and a back ho for recovering targets. Can I come hunt in your front yard Elton. :stretcher:

Since you have that back hoe you can dig out around my foundation for some new drain pipes I need to install...

SWEET! And while were at it, we can put in one of those new fangled concrete ponds.
