Hi people; I am new to this MD thing and havent bought a detector yet only due to the fact I dont know what I want or which one but leaning towards the Bounty Hunter brand . Simply because I use Cabellas and Walmart a lot. I live in Arkansas and have about 150,000 acreas of National Forest in my backyard with a lot of public ground. There has been reported several silver mines abandoned in the area with little known gold diggings. There are a lot of old homesteads in the area and talking to one friend. His uncle found an old cave and inside the cave found an old musket dating to what he thought might be the civil war. There is a big history of settlers,Indians and pioneers in the area . I have found several cemeteries with headstones dating back to the late 1700's and early 1800's in them.
I have been curious about detecting for a long time and now finally have the time to do it. My question now is hopping with someone with experience can guide me to the MD I think I want . Does it need the digital readout? All motion detection ? A big coil or little one ? does that matter ? I am willing to pay up to about $ 200 to get started with one but just dont know one from another or which one does what the best for the area I want to search out .
Some one offer some help ? thanks

You are my new best friend.
I'm new, too, but I'm sure the gurus will help you out.
Two things I can suggest are, (1) read all the manuals for the Bounty Hunters. There are helpful ideas in each one. (2) Amazon.com has a Friday Sale (every Friday) the link only works on Friday's. The last two weeks have had Bounty Hunters in the sale (under Home & Garden). I bought a Lone Star with Bonus Pack for $99.99 shipped. It should be hear 2/13/08.

Walmart sells the 202 which is a great unit. it also shows depth. Easy to learn and finds alot of tresures,And is about 198.00 tax not included

hello lee summ, welcome. i own a pioneer 202 and have found a bunch of stuff with it. its easy to operate and cheap too. it will do you well to read as many posts on here as you can stand, then go to the metal detector reviews web site. youre on the way my friend, any questions, feel free to ask. there are many talented and knowledgable people on this site who are more than willing to help you. good luck, and keep us in mind.

I think you should find out if it is legal to hunt those locations. Could get you in a lot of trouble. Get permission first.I know some men who were really hit hard for hunting where they were not supposed to.....Jack

Which ever one you decide on make sure it has a pinpoint mode. Makes locating your targets much eaiser, and faster with less mess. Always cover your holes and take what ever trash you dig with you to put in a trash can. Do not leave your trash on the ground and try to make it look like you have never been there. Save you a lot of headaches later.....Jack

Hunting in a LOT of national forest areas, or on Federal Land is a BIG NO NO...You can be fined heavily, and the law can confiscate everything you bring into the area...(Your detector, your car, your RV, your ATV, ect.)...Make sure you can hunt in the areas your interested in.

Yeh , I found out by doing some reading . But, there are some private land and state land inside the National Forest . I have yet to figure out how that has worked . But , the US Forestry is having a opening house next week and I figure I am going to be standing on the door step when they open the doors to the Open House and I am going to be asking a lot of questions. Besides before I really get into it up there .One of my favorite relatives has some in-laws who is retired in the law enforcement of the Forestry Service from here , so who better to ask than him ? Any way I couldnt wait after reading the manual some and playing with both of the
MD's I bought ( another post on here ) , I went out in the dark and was playing with the head phones on to see how it worked. I was makeing noises all over the place from what it was saying as trash to silver. I know the people who lived here had a thing with pennies and I have picked up about a 100 pennies from what I could find laying on the surface. Now I am really curious as to what I cant see. ( I live on about 3 acres here by the way )
