I'm just getting into the hobby. I picked up a Garrett GTA1000, and found out it shows everything as a nickel. I called Garrett customer support, They suspected a shorted coil. I picked up a coil, but no luck. Anyone have any ideas, or should I just send it to Garrett for repair.?

First off welcome to the forum and to the hobby. Give this thread a little time as someone may have run into this before and have a "fix" for you (sorry, I can't help you on this one). This is just my opinion but I would look into sending the detector to Garrett for service.

Garrett builds them and they fix them. Send it to Garrett. Welcome to the forum, good luck & happy hunting.

I just recently picked up a GTA X1000 PM at a yard sale and couldn't get it to start. I spent $34 on new battery sleeves (2), new battery sleeve holder case, and new phone cord from Garrett -- still didn't start.Shipped the whole unit to Garrett for a tune-up for $15 and the $40 charge from Garrett. Hoping to get it back next week. It's a great MD and well worth the $100 or so to get it repaired.

Sorry I can't help identify the problem, but Garrett will surely get ti working.

Mike
