Ladies and Gents,

Today is Day 1 as a detecting hobbyist, and I want to share it with those who may appreciate it. Having been told for a # of years to take a few pounds off by my large contingency of doctors, I figured a good way would be walking, AND having long fallen in love with the thought of swinging a metal detector.. I bought a Bounty Hunter Tracker IV last week. I've spent the last week deciphering where in Illinois you can and can't, and permit or no. So confirming that a permit is required in Loves Park, IL, I popped into Rock Cut Park ready for anything.

The day started slowly as I found some foil, a Pringles can lid, a plastic hair clip, and 2 bottle caps....and those alone made me feel like a true hunter. :)

On my way out the park, I decided to stop at a little inlet by the lake. Should've been a 10 minute scan. I was there over an hour, as I found a huge metal bar shaped like a 'V' about 4"deep and then by it a chunk of chain links, nothing of value but having fun. Then as I got closer to the lake, a sinker, and the assorted change of $1.09 including a 1936 nickle. And all that is awesome, but the more important issue,is I had SO much fun.

For those who are interested. You do need a permit for Rock Cut Park. The office is right by the main entrance. Some other ares near by...remember, I'm just starting, DeKalb IL has a no detecting policy. Sycamore, IL (the next town East, will let you scout and swing, but no digging.

That's as far as I am, any and all suggestions would be great to hear, and I'll keep posting my spots!!

Any Day Digging is better than any day working,

Andy

Hey Majk welcome...you had better luck than my first hunt...in my front yard. I found 11 cents. I went out to a local picnic area and was overwhelmed by my 2 cent day...and of course the ever present beaver tails, pull tabs and beer bottle tops LOL...but...as you said...it is for the fun of it! HH mi amigo

you are to be comended for being a newbie who is aware of the laws in his area....kudos...... refill your holes and have fun.....good luck.....

My Bounty Hunter Tracker IV paid for itself several times over. Experiment by air testing with coins and jewelry to get an idea of the IV's depth and where on the discrimination dial the different coins and jewelry fall under. Marking the disc. dial with tape strips or paint can help. Once you get an idea and learn the machine you will have a good idea of what you are digging before kneeling down. Some argue the air testing idea, but it worked for me. Also once you have an idea of its general depth you can raise and lower the swinging coil over the target to get an idea of its depth. The higher the coil is off the ground, and still get a signal, the closer the coin is to the surface. Welcome to a great hobby.
