Hello, summer has begun and while at the beach I was watching many people with metal detectors. I immediatly became intrested and I am now looking to purchase a metal detector. This is something that I know absolutly nothing about and I am only 17 years old. I am on a budget given my age (on a minimum wage job) what is that best "bang for the buck" detector that I could purchase for around $200. I don't even know if I can get something thats not a piece of junk for that price but thats all I am willing to spend. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. And also what are the best time to search the beaches? I wll be "hunting" in NJ if that helps at all. Thanks you very much in advance!

This one is easy! Get a Garrett Ace 250. They can be found everywhere for 199.00 and WOW what a detector for the money. Check out all the reviews, I can't think of another detector with so much for so little.. Get an aCE 250

I'll second what bluemax has said, the Garrett Ace 250. My son and BIL both have them, very impressive machines for the money.

I don't know about other detectors in this price range but the 250 also has a waterproof coil, very important for your type hunting.

I see these questions all of the time and it's like asking "what's the best kind of car to buy for 5,000". Everyone has an opinion as to which detector is the best and rightfully so, but, does that make it the right detector for you? By joining a club, and I understand that there are quite a few in New Jersey, you'll get to talk to many different people using many different types of equipment and most will even let you try their machines hands on. There's not a better way to get to know the ins and outs of different makes and models. The club setting will also answer all of the other questions concerning best beaches, times to go, wet sand or dry sand and car pooling to other areas with people of similar interests. Do what you want to do but that's how I got started 30 years ago when I was just 12. The next youngest person to me was about 40 years older at the time but I sure did learn a lot. Good luck whatever you decide to do. The only advice I'd give is be very, very, very patient and don't expect to get rich quick. You can pay for a detector real quick on the beaches, just don't expect it and be thankful if it should happen. therick :detecting:
