Newbie with Land Star

I just got a BH land star and my first day out I found a penny, a can, a token and a pull tab. I am not expecting to make any fantastic discovery but I am having trouble with the detector.

I will pass over an area and get multiple different tones each time I pass over again. Sometimes I dont get any signal back. What am I doing wrong?

The ground here in WY is super hard and I dig and dig, but it gets frustrating when your holes turn up empty.

What am I doing wrong.

Please help.

thanks.

nothing wrong there buddy. One way signals are trash your looking for targets that sound the same when you pass the coil over them in any direction. Change of tones and no tones are trash

Thanks. After I posted I went to the back yard and dug a couple of holes. I pulled out a large piece of tin. I will keep digging.

Any tips or suggestions with the use of this detector?

:bounty:Just keep swinging and learning as you go . This is how we all learn,at first I dug all beeps, sometimes I still do just to check myself. Above all else have fun!!!

just have patience and learn. the landstar is great. you might want to go to a playground or woodchip area and learn the tones and also it won't be so hard to dig. you could just put it in auto notch mode until you get used to it, that way a lot of junk will be eliminated. read and reread the manual. practice, practice and practice. maybe even make a test bed with different coins, nail and tab buried apart , you'll get good at pinpointing this way too. remember to not have the sensitivity set too high, if it starts to chatter then reduce just a little. happy hunting!!

one suggestion to speed up the process. When you get a good signal, lift your coil about 4-6" above the target as you swing. if it still sounds off it is a large target and probably junk. If the sound disappears then it is a small one like a coin or some treasure :wiggle:

Keep the sensitivity at about 9 o'clock to 12 o'clock, discrimination all the way down, ground balance at preset and hunt in the DISC mode or ALL-Metal mode if your in a trash free zone until you get to know how to adjust it...I get a LOT of false signals if i turn up the sensitivity beyond noon...keep your coil in motion swinging in a level arc in front of you...do not lift the coil at the end of your swings (pendulum swinging)...You will hear false signals at the end of your sweeps as the coil lifts off the ground if you do this, usually a low tone on the left swing, and a high tone on the right (at least how mine behaves if I pendulum swing)...once you get your settings down, and your swing steady, you will do much better. I also find that if I swing the 8 or 10 inch coil too close to tot lot edges (where the grass meets the mulch), I will get high pings because most tot lots have aburried metal barrier at this point. Also when digging in mulch tot lots, I have found that they use a plastic barrier under the mulch. I do not like digging through these, as it falls under the leave things as I found them subject...It allows weeds to grow up through the hole....

Happy Hunting,

BH-LandStar
