Newbie with first detector

Dutchman Dick

New member
Hi, all! I've been wanting to get into detecting for some time, but have not been able to fit a decent, discriminator-type detector into my budget. I finally won a used detector on EBay a few nights ago (just shipped yesterday).

It is a Radio Shack "Discovery 1000", and I have heard they were made by Bounty Hunter. It looks a lot like a Tracker IV.

Anybody have any positive experiences with this machine? Anything in particular I should know? I am sure it won't compare to something like an Ace 250, but it was the best I could afford for now...

Welcome to the addiction Dutchman.

I have never used this detector but I know that it is capable of detecting metal of all sorts. I'll wager that your Discovery 1000 will pay for itself in no time.

About the only advice I can give you is to keep fresh batteries in it (preferably rechargeables) and keep swinging it as much as you can.

I concur about the rechargeables. Check past posts to learn what type provided the most value for the money.

Have fun.

Welcome Dutchman.I have the Radio Shack Discovery 2000(BH Lonestar) I love this machine, the best accessory I purchased for it was the 4" coil. This machine is great in high trash areas(You will learn about this) I also have the BH Time ranger.I am working under the bleachers of an old highschool, and prefer the discovery over the time ranger, due to weight and the fact that reading the meter of the time ranger is useless in a "dig all signals situation" Treat the hobby of metal detecting like the old real estate mantra: Location, Location,Location! Find old spots where you know money was used, and people wore jewlery. Take your time, have patience, and enjoy!

If you have room make you a test garden with coins and trash. It will help you in learning your machine and if you want to try some test. Make a map then make two copies. one for the safety deposit box and the other in the same place as you keep your car ;) I wont say who but I know some one who keeps loosing his map. :wiggle:
