Newbie with a 6000 Di Pro SL meter issue

Hi guys,

I have been lurking in the forum for a few days now looking for an answer to this issue. None found.

So, I got what I think is a good deal on this detector from an older gentleman that used it literally twice, had a heart problem, & had to give up the hobby. Since then it has been stored in his closet. Of course the batteries were dead and he didn't even know how to change them or where they were located.

When I got it home I grabbed a manual off the web and located the battery compartment and got new batteries. Took it outside, ran thru the techie setup process as best I could understand it being my first time and all. FOUND A PENNY!!! Big WOOT! After a minutes of excitement, and yet another PENNY, I noticed that the meter didn't ever move other than a gentle sway back & forth as I am sweeping the unit. So, my first thought is that I have overlooked doing something to make it work, but I am not too sure now after a few days of searching for this answer. I called White's and they promptly gave me the authorized repair center in IL. Called them and no answer! Hmmm... frustration setting in!

Well, some of you guys with a lot of experience chime in and set me on the right path to meter movement please! Movement is good! :wiggle:

I am just dying to go look for some relics down at the river!!!

Thanks!

If it sways a little bit, it must not be locked up. I'd guess it is a static electricity issue. Try rubbing a dryer sheet over the meter screen. Sounds weird, I know. But grab a dryer sheet from your laundry room and give it a shot. JMHO HH Randy

Hi Randy,

Yup, I read about that in the manual. Tried it with no positive results.

I come from an electronics background, so I kinda understand meter movements, but just not when used in a detector. It just acts dead, like nothing is telling it to move.

Since there is no warranty left on it, I don't guess it will hurt anything to take it apart and examine for a loose connection.

22-23 lookers on here and only your comment. I would have thought I could have got more input.

Come on guys loosen up. Talk to me! I want a meter when I go hunting this weekend!!!

Thanks, again Randy!

Well, if the needle sways when you move the detector, it isn't locked up. And if wiping the face in an effort to eliminate "static cling" didn't help, it obviously has to be something else. If you have an electronics background, don't be shy about taking on the task yourself. The meter is similar to a VOM in that it is activated with varying current flow. If you're going to take it apart, look for the obvious....... broken or loose wire, cold solder joint or dirty contacts within the circuit. On the other hand, depending how far you want to get into it, you might end up finding a faulty circuit component. Best of luck to you. Sorry I cound't be more help. HH Randy

Hey Randy.... Is the meter needle supposed move to the Battery area on the face when the Power switch is moved to the BAT. CHK. position?

If not, then what indication does one get when it is placed in that position?

Yes...When you turn the switch all the way to the right (BAT CHK), meter should deflect W-A-Y right, past the last color panel on the meter.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.... Still no movement! Drat... I sure wanted to have this thing ready for the weekend. May just have to go with out the meter working.

Any suggestions or input is welcome.
Dave

Hi Dave

Maybe a 'winter time' tune up at White's is in order, I have never sent mine in...........but what I have heard is that they have excellent service.

Your "problem" may be a blessing in disguise. Try taking the machine out & working without the meter...By sound alone. Excellent training. Listen for those round tones that are the same in both directions. If you start to dig too many tabs, move the disc up a bit. A large percentage of my "good" finds came using machines that didn't have all the bells & whistles.

Good Luck, DR

Turn it on to battery Check: View battery strength. If the meter didn't move, something's wrong.

Pass a coin passed the coil. View the display. If the needle didn't move, something's wrong.

If you sweep over a coin (or air test a coin) and the meter display DOES move but registers much lower than where it should, most likely culprit is a faulty coil.

If there's no registry of a target or battery strength, the:

a.. the meter is bad.
b.. a meter wire contact is bad,
c.. it might need simple service,
d.. ir might need more attention.

It sounds like there's just no needle deflection, so open it up and take a peek. If it's an obvious problem you can fix, have at it. If not, I'd personally send it to White's in Sweet Home, Oregon.

Well, guys, I spoke with White's a couple of days ago and the fella volunteered to send me a tested, but used meter movement at no charge. Great guy! If that doesn't do it then it's time to send it in. Not sure when I'll do that cause I am having too much fun anyhow. BARguy, you are right, I am getting to know this thing.

Thanks for your input too Monte. There is NO movement even when in Bat Chk!

I'll post again when I get the new meter installed.

Movement is good!!! Changed out the meter and BINGO the meter went wild with movement. The meter that Jay, at White's, sent me is used with a blue face, requiring a swap out with my old one. So, just for kicks I removed the "new" one and put the original back in. Yup, you guessed it!

Monte got it in "b." (above). :clapping: Bad connection!

It's great! I immediately went out and found a metal hair clip! Gosh, this is fun! :bouncy:

Thanks, for all the help and support from you guys!
Dave

Yep, Monte is a cool guy!

I have a Whites 6000/Di PRO SL that I'm interested in selling. It is in very nice conditioned and has been allot of fun. I moved up to a Spectrum XLT and will probably be selling that soon also to purchase either the Spectra V3 or the Etrac. If anyone is interested in either the 6000/Di PRO SL or the Spectrum XLT, please contact me. I just started researching what their asking prices are so you are more that welcome to make offer.

Try putting your detectors on the For Sale section of this site. Some pics & prices will speed things up, I'm sure. Good Luck!

MONTE ROCKS!!!! Im glad you got your Whites detector to work right for you.Just like there is more money in the ground than there is in circulation,I would venture to say that there are probably more cherry whites metal detectors languishing in peoples closets than there are in the hands of those that would use them.Several years ago a woman saw me metal detecting at a Lakeside picknick ground and came over and asked me what I thought Two whites metal detectors might be worth that Her husband and her had bought about 10 years earlier .she said that they were like new and had been used only a few times and put away and were in their original whites boxes. She said that she emagined that they were probably worth a great deal of money.all I could say was,Im sure they must be.Luckily the enternet came about and Feebay and many of those older whites detectors are finding their way into the hands of those who will use and a appreciate them.I recently had Whites turn a Jimmy sierra XLT into a regular XLT so that it is more user friendly and easier to use. They charged me practicaly nothing and my detector is like new.Dont hesitate to call them for a repair job. They have very reasonable repair prices and their
Whites Service department Rocks!!!
