Newbie with 3 different detectors

DetectorDummy

New member
Hi Everyone i am new to this hobby so new i did not even go out and play yet. I bought three metal detectors today at a garage sale for 100 bucks i figured that was a good price so i could not pass them up. The man i bought them from said they were his dads who passed away this summer and was cleaning out the house so he can sell it. He gave me a quick lesson on how they work and they all seem to work. Now, what i have is, 1 garrett ACE 250 like new. 1 whites Eagle programmable . and 1 whites coinmaster 4900D. first and most important question which one is the better one. second question how can i find how old thease are i can't get an accruate date from whites web site. as for the ace 250 i see they still sell them new. And does anyone know of any video for learning this new hobby. Thanks Wally

What a deal! If your just starting out - keep the 250 and sell the others on ebay to free up some cash for accessories. You should get enough to buy an electronic pinpointer, digging knife and sniper coil for the Ace - or at least close to it. Visit the Garrett and Whites web site. There are tips and tricks. First you need to practice in your own yard. Especially target retrieval. You don't want to dig and leave gaping holes.

I agree totally with khouse. Check out the Garrett forum on this site and you can get all the help you can stand. Once you have gotten over the learning curve with the Ace 250 you will be hooked like the rest of us. It is all but impossible to get an Ace 250 for the price you paid. I just got one on Ebay for $151.50 and felt like I stole it! Put the others on Ebay and get yourself some accesories as khouse said. Happy Hunting and The Best of Luck!

Just like Jack and khouse said...the Ace 250 is the newest and a smoking deal itself for that price. That being said...the Eagle came out either 87' or 88' and even wayyy back then that machine cost almost 800.00! Now it won't be worth anything near that but if it still works good...you just might like it better than the 250. I say try them for awhile...join a club and have fun

and let me know if and when you put one of them on E-bay cause I will be bidding. But before you do that, try out all 3 machines and see what one you like best.

Hi again everyone. thanks for the info, you guys were a great help. I'm going to take them out this weekend and give them a a try. Any other advice you guys can offer up would be great. thanks again

You'd do as well to sell the 4900. The remaining two will start you out keen in this hobby.

Wally,I would clean all three units up,make sure you have the manuals, take photos of the detectors and sell them on Ebay.Don't mention anything about the owner passing away with your description. You could expect 155.00 for the ace,Eagle Spectrum 275.00,4900D 195.00 total 625.00. Keep the shipping low 15.75 Continental US.Believe it or not you'll get creep ed out using a dead guys detector. With the cash from the sale buy a used Fisher CZ5.

The 250 is brand new and about the hottest selling detector on the market and they retail for about $250. You got your money back on this one. The other two are real oldies. The 250 is the one you want to learn. You can go to the Garrett website and download a manual for free. Then come over to the Garrett Forum and find out how to use it.

Hi everyone ok i'm back with another question. I went out with all the detectors i aquired amonth ago, (Garrett ace 250, white's eagle programmable, and white's 4900/D. here is where i'll start The 4900 seems to be the lesser of the three althogh in it's time it was good compared to the eagle and ace it is just slow and out dated. the White's Eagle Programmable seems to work great and lots of features just alittle shy on the depth it goes down to about 5". the ace 250 works good too but picks up too much junk and then trying to set the discriminate it passes over some good stuff i planted under ground only 3" down. I think the one i like better is the good old white's programable. i think with a better search coil i think it will work great. anyone know of any search coils that will work with the White's Eagle Programmable? thanks.

Detector Dummy,Your choice doesn't surprise me.The Eagle can be programmed for a lot of different conditions and hunter requirements.Check with the Whites forum and read some of Monte's post about this unit.

Your results with the Ace 250 are not the norm. Post on the Garrett forum with your info and get feedback from the 250 users. You will be a lot more pleased with it's performance. HH

I agree with Jack the Ace is a great detector, but the Eagle is basicly an XLT minus a couple of programs and different batteries.I've compared the Eagle and the Spectrum in the field together, and they are real close on performance.Bottom line Ace vs XLT,which the Ace doesn't quite match the performance of the older Eagle.

Hi i asked this question on this forum because if i asked it on the Garrett forum most people would say the ace is better. If i asked it on the White's forum most people would say the Eagle is better i figured i would most likely get a impartial answer.

I guess I wasn't clear. Please take no offense. If your 250 only read 3", then there is something wrong somewhere. The depth meter (bars) read out to 8" plus and the 250 will definetly go there. I have gotten to where in many areas I have to set back on sensitivity to get out the shallow stuff so I can let the 250 get after the deeper stuff. There are several people on the Garrett forum that could possibly help you with the 250. I would like to see you be able to do better with it. HH

DetectorDummy, as this is posted almost 8 months late! Not sure what you did? Hopefully you kept all three! I would have told you the opposite of most of the other responses: sell the Ace 250 and keep the the Eagle and 4900! These are still very competitive detectors although they have some age to them...................HH..........Joe
