Newbie trying to get a MT

Hello everyone, this is my first post. I've been collecting coins for almost 15 years, and years ago I started rock collecting thanks to my daughter who got me interested. If you put this two ingredients together... I would like to start with metal detecting focus in current and old coins. Going to parks, lakes, old houses, beaches, rivers, you name it... but like I said before, focus mainly in current and old coins to add to my collection!!!)

I've been doing research for which machine to get and I know for newbies like myself this can be overwhelming and tentative (NOX 600/800) because there always going to exist a better machine for a little more money than what you are planning to spend an sometimes discussions in forums can confuse you even more. I'm a very dedicated person I do not mind spend time to get to know a MD

Which MT would you recommend me to get to find coins anywhere (not necessarily waterproof but I will need it for shallow water)
under 500$?

... I live in Maryland just as a reference.

I'm not going to recommend one particular machine. Will leave that to other contributors cuz theres a lot of really good machines out there and yea you will get confused. I have done MDing for 30 years and IMO coin hunting requires a bit more skill because unless you want to dig all the junk out you have to kind of know how to guess if its good or not. I would suggest downloading Dan Dankowski's "Fisher Intelligence". He's a Fisher guy but the paper deals alot more with MD theory than the machine. One thing he brings out is that with coin hunting today most of the old stuff is either really deep or masked by junk so a good machine should be able to handle both scenarios. I don't have the machine you mentioned but I do know its really good for the type hunting you are interested in. Hope this helps.

There is a multitude of very good detectors available today, but not as many that are water proof in your price range. Close to that $500. price is the A T Pro by Garrett and it is a excellent machine and not difficult to learn. Good luck and welcome to a great and addicting hobby. HH jim tn

Love that At Pro ! But Fischer came out with the splash proof F 44. Easy on the pocket. Check out the U tube videos.

Fisher F44 with 11x7 DD coil and a 7” or 8” round concentric coil is hard to beat. You’ll have enough money left over to get a good pinpointer and still be under $500 5 year warranty if bought new.

Teknetics T2+ from Teknetics direct.com comes with a pinpointer for just over $500. Great deal and they will firmware upgrade it free. A great deal. Again, 5 year warranty.

Teknetics Patriot is also great from the same site.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I need to explain myself a little better.

First, I'm removing completely the beach from my places to look for coins, I do not know If I need a waterproof MD, since I'm just going to use it in small streams where the water is very shallow, a waterproof coil should do.
Second, I'm not going to spend more than $500 (maybe $550 including the pointer but that is it.) So, I'm definitely not getting the NOX 600 right now.
Third, what do you guys think about the AT PRO, X-TERRA 705, TEKNETICS T2 CLASSIC, White's TREASUREpro, and FISHER F4, which one will you get based on my needs, previously explained?
Finally, anyways after my first MD (still do not know which one) I will save money to eventually get the NOX 800.

Hi. those are all great machines theres also a minelab Etrac almost new here in the classified which is a great machine

Hi chuck, ky.

There are several different T2s. The T2+ I mentioned to the OP listed at tekneticsdirect.com comes with an upgrade certificate. If it was me I would buy it and have them do any upgrades available before shipping it to me.

You are going down the same road many other "new to the hobby" users go down.
You look at the cost as a dead expense ... when in reality the cost of your detector is ZERO!
Think about it ... you use it and it puts money and other valuables back into your pocket. Eventually it pays for itself.
What other hobby does that?
I see you are already thinking your second detector will be a Equinox 800 ... why ... do you gold prospect?
If you are not looking for gold nuggets then the Equinox 600 is a much wiser choice for coins and jewelry.
Buy a used Equinox 600 instead of a new one ... commit to getting out and using it ... it will soon be paid for.
In all my years of metal detecting parks, school yards, beaches and other places I have never had a metal detector cost me anything.
I have found so much gold jewelry at the beaches and parks that the initial cost has been recovered and then some.
So think of it as a loan to yourself and make the payments out of the items you will find.

If you buy a used detector and after a few weeks using it you can sell it and recover all your money plus keep the items you found.
Is that a good deal or what?

Each type has advantages, and negatives.
Also having a true all metal non motion mode is nice.
Buying used can get you much more bang for the money too.

Forget the F4, add the Teknetics Patriot...$400.

If it was me buying a new detector, for $599.00 I would purchase a T2 Special Edition, which comes with both the 11"DD coil & a round 5"DD gold nugget coil. The T2SE has Boost Process, Cache Mode and FA Mode. Because of its' lightning fast recovery speed, it excels in picking out those really deep coins in iron infested sites.

Keep in mind that the price you see listed is the Manufacturers Minimum Advertised Price. Most dealers will work with you on price. Call some of the sponsors and discuss your needs and price.

It's not so much as the price of the unit , but how well you know the unit . I have multiple detectors , some higher end , and have been out hunted by a 65 dollar BH Pioneer 202 . I'd say the pin pointer is a must , then take your leftover money and just take your pick , and spend the time and learn it .
