Hi folks, I've only been MDing since last Christmass. I have a Tracker 4 and a Garrett gold Scorpion. I've been prospecting off and on most of my life. I have the hots for either a GTi 1500 or 2500, the Tracker just isent getting the job done for coin and relic, and you may as well wave a stick in the air when it comes to prospecting.
I found some real good prices at Clevenger Detector Sales out of K.C. Missouri and was wondering if anyone here has delt with them before.
Also has anyone prospected with the 1500 or 2500? I can't seem to find anything on the net in reguards to prospecting with either machine!? My Stinger works great prospecting, but if I ran into a good mineral
area with the 1500 or 2500 how well would it perform?
You folks have a real nice site here and I have gotten some good pointers reading your posts, you all seem like real nice people.
I thank you kindly for your time and trouble........Gene

From the land of the Bluenose...welcome to the forum. Not up on the prospect mode of the newer machines but hopefully someone will give you hand. Happy hunting.

It was a "used" Surfmaster II. Price was right and it came disassembled, still in the box! Didn't look as though it had been used at all.

I was satisfied with the deal. I wish they had a website I could check-out as their prices seem very reasonable.

BTW, I have a 1500 and it's a very good machine... like any machine there is a learning curve. One of the best coin-shooters out there.

Thanks Skillet, I'll send out there address and phone # incase you would like to contact them;

Clevenger Detector Sales
8602 North Oak Trafficway
Kansas City, Missouri 64188

1-800-999-9147

They have lots of reasonably priced brand name detectors. New, demos and used.

Thanks for the welcome Leslie. I've been to Nova Scotia twice while long haul trucking, always wanted to get out to the coast and see the tide come and go as it's the highest tide it the world I understand.

i bought my 1500 from Cleavengers five years ago. It was a demonstrator model with new model warranty. Was very pleased with the price, the service from Cleavengers but never had to use the warranty as the 1500 has performed flawlessly. Don't know about prospecting but it's a great coin machine. Recently added a GI-1 probe from Sunray and have a really nice unit now.

Hi ten Cents!
I was unaware that the Sun Ray Probe fit the Garrett! I'll be sure to look into that!
I have a couple of weeks before I send off for a new MD. Thanks for the info and happy hunting.

I can relate what others in nugget areas say. Also you have 2 "VLF" machines and they just don't work well in mineralised soil. The Garrett GTI series are also VLF units. You can use a DD coil which are available for the Garretts as this will help but it will still be a far cry from the performance of a "PI" (pulse induction) unit. Garrett makes 2 PI units. The Seahunter Mark II and the Garrett Infinium LS. Both can be used under water and on land. Both are heavy and PI units must be swung slowly. Both can be hip-mounted. The Infinium is much deeper however and carries a heftier price tag. A fellow that lives in Alaska uses an Infinium and says it has comparable performance to the next to the top of the line Minelab detector for about half the money and is waterproof. You can go to the Garrett forum on Treasure Depot and post for Steve Hersbach. He is well known and many people respect his opions. Whatever you buy I hope you do well with it.

Paul;

Thanks for the info, I have the Garrett Gold Scorpion, it works great in the area I nuggett hunt in. I just wanted a machine I could use for coin and relic and If I happened to get into an area that looked like a gold spot I could use the MD at hand to check it out. The PI units are way out of my $$$$ range, would be nice though!! :garrett:

$300-$350. I saw a used Infinium on E-bay for a little over $500. That was an exceptional buy though. With the Seahunter being able to be hip-mounted you could still use it on land. You could check with Garrett but I think that the SeaHunter is running 64 freqwuencies which is a heck of a lot more than the Landminders from down under. The Infinium offers more coils and frequencies I believe.

Clevengers are excellent to do business with. Although you can hunt gold with the 1500, the 2500 is your best shot as it has all metal with manual ground balance.

Thanks Bill;

Then the 2500 it'll be! They have demo's listed at $654.00 with 2 year warranty, 9.5" coil. I't should be a fun one to work with too, lots of gizzmos to keep you on your toes!!

Yeah it's loaded with gizmos and the ground balance has about 256 degrees of adjustment so you can fine tune that puppy. Course it has Auto Track that ground balances precisely as you scan.

Hi Bill;

I'll be ordering that 2500 rascal, or the rascal MXT? sometime next week. I really torn between the two. which would be the better unit??? :thumbup: :thumbdown:

I haven't used the MXT so can't comment on that. It's a choice only you can make. The 2500 is one of the most versatile machines out there and a really deep seeker and has features found on no other detector. Don't think you could go wrong but I can't tell you what to buy. Do you have any dealers in your area where you could try each model out?

Bill

Hi Bill;

I've test drove the MXT in a controled area here in town "Whites Dealer". But we have no Garrett dealer here, near as I can tell the closest one is in Washington State. I bought my Scorpion on the 2 coil special, from an outfit back east, it's been a real good unit I don't have one complaint. I did read that the MXT is a noisy machine in that it pops and crackles.
I don't think I'd like that much when your trying to listen to the ground and for bears too.
We have those grumpy Grizzlys here, as well as the Blackies, there grumpy too when they have little ones.
Hmmmm! Perhaps I've just talked myself right out of considering the MXT??...Thanks Bill!

:rage:

I have the GTI 1500 and the MXT. I use the MXT only with the small coil. In my area the stock coil is way t0o noisy. The 1500 is a lot more relaxing machine to use. (Again, in my area) I can only imagine that the 2500 would be better. I have tried to test them together and didn't find any difference, but maybe there was no deeper targets to be found where I was hunting:shrug: The batteries in the MXT will last maybe three time as long as they do in the 1500. I think this is probable due to the imaging. Good luck

Thanks Glen;

I will likely use the 2500 just for coins and artifacts, but it's nice to have a machine that can double as a prospecting rig too.
take care and best of luck to you!......................:detecting:

Speaking of bears, which I've had some experience with, here's a story. Guy I knew years ago lived in the woods in Maine. He was out one day and came upon a momma bear with cub and momma got real grumpy real fast. With no weapon for defense he had to think fast so he snatched up the cub and started walking back to his cabin. Momma bear was right behind him with her snout right in his butt. He said he could feel the heat from her breath in his rear.

As long as he had that cub she wouldn't touch him so he continued on to his cabin, stepped inside, tossed the cub back to momma, and slammed the door. He said that was the most frightening walk he had ever made in his life, but something to think about if one ever gets caught in a similar situation.

When I lived in NOrthern Idaho my best friend was a bear hunter and he nailed a beauty one time that you don't often see - a 600 pound silvertip black bear that stood seven feet high. And yes Grizzlies have a tendency to be extremely grumpy. :)
