Newbie to metal detecting

Hi all,
Please excuse my newbieness. I live in the northern burbs of Chicago. Lake County. My room mate, you might know him......Mike Teresi, let me borrow one of his detectors, it's the Minelab Explorer II. I only started using it about 2 weeks ago. I started detecting with it in school yard playgrounds. Didn't find much though.
He, Mike, said I needed a probe. I bought a probe from Garret's web site. Since then I have been finding lots of coins. No silver yet. I have been learning about the machine and what it can do. Last Monday I went to an old ball park near me and after several passes near the stands came across a good signal. I dug it up and out popped a mens 14k gold ring. Only two weeks into it and I found a good find.
Here is a pic of it:

Nice digs! It helps to have someone teach you the ropes! Keep up the good work.

ive been hunting a while but am new to my explorer. its going to be different than my ace. hope this place can help me along.

Thanks all. I definitely have been bitten by the metal detecting bug. I was very discouraged at first because I found targets but couldn't find what they were.
Reading the detector manual helped. Hello ! ! Da on me. I'm getting more confident now on what to dig and not dig. You never know though. A pull tab
might look to the detector like a quarter until you dig it up. :( I'm so excited about metal detecting now that I just ordered the Minelab E-Trac.
This should be a fun summer. I also just got, besides the pinpoint probe, gloves, knee pads, and a pouch to put the junk in. Did I miss anything else?
Dan.
