Newbie to metal ddetecting!

Hi everyone! I am going to get a Garrett ACE 250 for my first metal detector. It suppose to be delivered tomorrow! I can't wait! I know that it's going to take a lot of practice though. Any advice will be very appreciated! Thanks!

Welcome SouthernMann. You bought yourself a great machine. I always suggest people with a new machine go to a high school, where coins (especially pennies) are plenty. Take along a screwdriver and use it to pinpoint and pry those coins out. The purpose of this is to get familiar with the ACE 250, learn pinpointing and to develop a good sense of what the machine is telling you. Start hunting in coins mode, turn the sensitivity to half or less and only dig the shallow targets for a while. And, after the hunt, take a pic or two and post it on the forum. Please feel free to ask for help on this forum, and remember, there is no such thing as a dumb question. All of us were in your shoes at one time. :)

Hellooooooooooo SMan, and welcome to metal detecting.
I have an ace 250 and it is one sweeeeeeeeeeeeet mowsheen.
My advice is for you to read the manual, read it again, get some information on the web about how detectors work (just go for basics) and glossary for metal detecting terms.
Go have fun, ask questions, but remember that a detector works on conductivity of metal, and there are a bazillion variables out there. Do not get discourage if you dig a washer when your 250 says its a quarter. Be patient, it will pay off.

Well, if you go to the parks, or schools please study the recovery techniques they are vary important, because you don't want to get yourself ran off your first trip out.

Also another good thing to do is to take your trash with you. Nothing worse then someone digging up a rusty old can and just leaving it there for some child to get hurt on.

I only mention these rules because no body else did and it's all part of the fun.

Welcome, and like John said there are no dumb questions.

This forum is loaded with advice. Just fire away when you have a problem. The 250 is fairly easy to use but has a slight learning curve so practice is the word of the day.

Yeah I keep forgetting to mention those trivial things to newbies, like not leaving gaping holes behind and piles of trash. I've been doin this too long.

Thanks for the advice.....now if it was just cooler outside I could try this new machine out! 95 degrees is just to hot to enjoy it! Sweat running in your eyes just seems to take the fun out of it!

Yep, you just about have to hit it at daylight to get a couple of hours in before the heat sends you scrambling for the AC. Happy Hunting!!

I was just looking at the weather cast for the weekend. I just finishing up a long week tomorrow and the weather for Saturday here on the old High Desert is supposed to be around 88 degree's. I'm headed out early morning and hope to get in several good hours before it heats up, but 88, wow that's nothing.
