newbie to Excalibur looking for advise

kneedet

New member
I am now the proud owner of the Excalibur II and would like to hear any advise about it, from any bad issues I should keep an eye out for, to help full hints on how to use it for saltwater beach hunting both dry and wet sand. i heard from some that it has had some issues working properly since being made in Malaysia and it has a learning curve which I am looking on advise on the best way to keep things easy, best settings for newbie etc. Also if anyone would like to share any horror stories or success stories, I would like to hear them please. thanks all.

ok dont hip mount i did that and had wire problems with in a year get a straight shaft ..(i recommend P .L.U.G.GE R shaft on feebay ) there in no limit how long i can swing with that shaft

settings

disc 0-1
volume 75%---100%
sens 5-6 max swing slow

clean after every use in the salt water and sand

be gentle with the knobs they will go first ...my thresh know clicks twice when i turn it of

Thanks:) I did order a straight shaft with it which is what's on there now. Wow what a difference. You don't run your sensitivity at max to get most depth? And are all the knobs that delicate?

sens at max... i dont think ur beach will let u get away with that ...when u get some hours with the machine try pushing it a bit more but u will get fals signals it should run nice at about 6

dont use auto mode on the sens.

excal has been compared to all the water machines most like the excal some like the cz 21 from fisher others like the PI units like dual field ,,sea hunter.. sand shark

Disc. 1- Sensitivity adjust it until you get a good steady threshold - Volume as loud as you can stand it. After you use the machine awhile run your sensitivity up until it starts falsing then back it up a little. Each beach is different. I usually set my sensitivity anywhere from 11 o'clock to 3 o'clock. Great machine just be patient and learn the tones. Dig everything. Just get out and use it. Get yourself a good scoop. Listen for breaks in your threshold and faint sounds. Investigate everything. A nickle sounds a lot like GOLD so practice learning that tone. Cans and bottle caps are not as bad out in the water as they are in the dry and wet sand. Good luck and take your time. HH :minelab:

Everything you need to learn is available here.http://clivesgoldpage.com/

Read all the Excal books and books pertaining to searching. It will help tremendously.

Thanks for all the great info. Where are some good videos on using the Excal. I am really excited to get out there and use it and I will gladly report back any finds
Btw does anyone use the alkaline battery pack with theirs?

use the search function for this forum and put excal in the search box and you will come up with a boatload of info:minelab:

hello, i see in one of the clips from tomcatpi not to use auto sens. why is that? i just bought a used excal 1000 and waiting for it to be delivered. i read the manual it said to use auto. any help would be greatly appreciated.thanks

auto sens does not go deep and is not as sensetive dont use auto stay around 5-6 if falses take it down a bit if not turn it up a bit ...when i got my first excal every one told me not to use auto

I experimented with using it back in the day. This was before Clive started writing books, so I had to figure out what worked in my area on my own. I went 27 straight hunts without a piece of gold, I came out of AUTO and low and behold the gold came back! There are MUCH better ways to mode than AUTO. I NEVER use it anymore.

i heard that beyond 3 sensativity on the Excal you start to lose gold?

Yes disc above 3 sorry

I found mine heavy even on the straight shaft so made a belt mount for it based on pluggers design with a cable relief to prevent cable damage. Only time will tell if it works without damaging the cables but I can swing it for hours on the beach now with minimal fatigue.
As to the points on disk and sensitivity I agree with what has been said. I bought a couple of Clive Clynick's books which are very good. I also got a CD by Tony Diana on ear training for the Excalibur which teaches you the subtle differences in tones that targets will make. Very useful as well.
