Although I've been metal detecting for quite a while, I'm planning on trying freshwater detecting this summer. I'm in landlocked Pennsylvania, but my part of the state is blessed with innumerable freshwater streams, the Westbranch of the Susquehanna river, and a few flood control type lakes. There are very few natural lakes or ponds. The Westbranch here was the main transportation route for the settlers since the late 1700's through the mid-1800's when the railroads finally reached the central part of the state. Lock Haven (my town) was also the terminus for the PA canal.
Most of the river is easily waded, as are all the freshwater streams. I've already done research on fords, ferries, swimming holes, etc., but I mostly need help on how to search for and recover targets. The bottom materials are almost all large gravel stones (marble size) all the way up to bowling ball size rocks. There are some islands that were in use, and they are all sugar sand.
I have an Excall 800, chest waders and shoes, and am debating a floating sieve and scoop. WHAT CAN I USE TO RECOVER TARGETS AND HOW DO I GO ABOUT IT? Mfg's and model numbers would be great. I'm mostly interested in finding coins.
Thanks A LOT!
