Newbie Question

I've owned a MXT for 2 years now and have not used it much. That is going to change. I went out today and did not find any coins etc, but did find some old stuff. My question is this. I have the standard coil on it but also have the 8x14 DD coil. Which should I use looking for coins? And should I search in Coin/Jewelry mode or Relic? Our soil here is pretty mineralized (Western CO). Thank you for any feedback. Oh, I'm enjoying this forum and learning alot, thanks. RonD

Hi....I've used my MXT for about two years now and I learn more about it's capabilities every time I go out, it seems. Along with the standard coil I have a 14" Excelerator and a 5" Excelerator. I hunt some very trashy sites and use the 5" mostly. I use the 14" when I want to cover lots of ground in a soccer field or some such. I've rarely used the Coin/Jewelry mode, preferring the two tones of the Relic mode. I usually hunt with trigger forward in any mode. I really don't like the iron "grunt" thing.

In the past few months I've started using the Prospecting mode a lot and find it's noticeably deeper and, by watching the VDI's closely and keeping the gain and SAT as high as possible, I can find more good targets in the old trashy sites. It has only one tone but it's great to have the "iron %" readout. That, combined with the VDI numbers, gives me a real good indication of whether to dig or not.

Good luck!!

Marc

Thanks Marc, I appreciate the help. This is all starting to make sence to me, this forum really is excellent information.

I've posted this same opinion a number of times so you may have read it elsewhere. At any rate, I've found the 4X6 coil to be very superior when coinshooting in heavy trash, the 5.3 is good as well, but I prefer the little 4X6. The 6X10 handles trash better than the 9.5 and has become my most used coil. If you hunt many trashy areas, the large coils are a real pain as they cover too many targets at once giving confusing sounds and info. I've hunted mostly in c/j mode, but after reading how some on the forum are having good results on coins in the other modes I intend to give that a serious try when the winter weather eases off here. For what it's worth as well, I've seen different trash items often ID as coins, especially foil and melted aluminum, but haven't had actual coins ID as anything but a coin. The false ID seems to be pretty universal with all TID machines, but with practice you'll soon begin to hear the difference in the signals especially if you also take time to X the target from several directions. In the end tho the only sure thing is to dig and eyeball the target. I have found that the MXT has helped me to dig less trash as I've learned its quirks. Have fun.

I totally agree with Mark. Good luck and get that MXT dirty. The more you use your machine, the more you trust it and you won't be digging much junk at all. I know mine like the back of my hand and wouldn't trade it for any other machine. When deep hunting, I always use the Relic mode. My hubby has the DFX and and he's the same way. Wouldn't trade it for any other. To each their own. And believe me, I give him a run for his money. :twodetecting:
