Newbie Question on Excalibur Depth

A

I purchased a Minelab Excalibur 1000 about two months ago. Besides getting lots of false signals, the depth doesn't seem very good on coin-sized targets (great for beer cans). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Are there any videos or good books out for the Excal other than the owner

I am not sure this will help for I am new with the Excal.800- Beach hunting-I had to run in auto sensativity...and I was getting not bad depth...If I tried to run in manual I got lots of falsing...with knob at 12 o'clock it was ok...I rewrapped my coil wire tighter around lower shaft mostly on the top halfand I could use knob at 11 oc'lock..and got good depth..I also removed each knob one at a time and turned it till it stoped and then put knob back on to its proper place(pointer). That way I know where pointer is that is where I am really. You must know by now that the knobs will keep turning after the shaft has stopped.which might give you false position of the knob. Turn them very carefully and don't over turn them after resetting them to true position. Definately a flaw in design. I have been digging some fairly deep coins...I know it is deep when it is a soft whisper and pinpointing is very hard to hear.

Hmmm...mine don't. I just tried them all and they have a positive stop at the indicated end. I mean, I didn't try to force them or anything, but they do stop at both ends of travel.

Yes, I had this happen on the discrimination/all metal mode knob. That was no biggie. But then I learned not to over-tighten the other knobs. I've heard this is a common complaint.

I've had a very difficult time hearing the deep signals. Every time I think I hear a weak deep signal it turns out to be falsing.

Another thing I don't get is why this machine is so poor on air tests? It will barely detect a silver quarter at 8 inches in the air.

Somethings wrong I'm afraid...I just tested one with an 800 (7.5") coil and could just get a signal on a quarter at 10 inches though it was weak and the sweep speed had to be right.

Brian is right....that sounds weak.

In discriminate mode.............with disc set to minimum.......

I have 2 different Sovs that test a dime to 10" with the 800 coil. About 12" with a quarter.

My 10" coil will test a dime to a bit over 11".

What I have seen so far is that when testing, (air) quarters test about 2" more than dimes and pennies no matter which coil is used.

If you have a coil cover, take it off and clean out any dirt you find.

I don't know just how close the Sov and Xcal should compare, but don't think there should be much difference. You can call Minelab for another opinion.

Good luck with it.

I heard they just updated those knobs several months ago, but there's probably many out with the old style knobs too. The one I owned had knobs without stops and unfortunately included the on and off knob. Can't tell you how many dead batteries I had before I finally started disconnecting the battery after detecting. clapping:

Does the Sovereign or Excalibur give a faint signal on deep small targets? It's seems with mine I either get a loud signal or none at all. I run my volume on full.

Steve when I first received my Excalibur I put the search coil cover on and headed out to do some water metal detecting. Shortly after I started metal detecting I started getting a lot of False Signals also. Water mixed in with Little tiny black sand had gone in between the coil cover and the coil. I took the coil cover off for the day and everything was great. When I got home I took the coil cover and put it back on the coil and sealed it with silicone sealer. I have never had any problems with it since.

No, no, no...it's got TWO flags on it...you KNOW it's gotta have one on BOTH sides! :yo

I picked 'em up in the "Pimp My Ride" aisle at Pep Boys. I know it's an Aussie machine, but I have to represent for my homies. :usaflag :)

I didn't really mean just the knobs. I meant the entire control pots. They would have had to change all of it out to make it work like it was supposed to. Mine did have the Radio Shack knobs on it though, they worked great.
