Newbie needs meter help!

Hello folks, This is my first post but have been enjoying all the great info for a while. My question is, does anyone know who can perform the 180 mod on my new digisearch meter? Any info would really help, Thank's

If you have a digisearch meter, then it is already scaled for 180.

Are you really sure that's what you have?
HH

Hello Art, yes it is a digisearch meter that i recently got with a slightly used sovereign elite. It is the newest looking meter with the light blue face plate/sticker. After hooking up said meter, it reads all the way up to 550. Could this still be a 180 meter?

Definitely NOT a Digisearch.
Probably the Elite "Sovereign" meter (550 scale) with a Digisearch decal installed. If it adjusts (on a dime) from around 500 to 600 then it is a 550 scaled meter and not digisearch which was released shortly after the GT.

Wildherre on the "sovereignmods" website was selling mod kits to rescale the 550 meters to 180. Try contacting him.
The rear calibration pot and one resistor have to be changed to rescale.

Hey Art, I tried emailing them at the sov mods website a couple of times but got no response. I just figured they weren't doing anything anymore. But since we have talked a few minutes ago I have hooked up the meter and the 500 to 600 numeral readings i was getting were -500 to -600 readings. Although I could get it to go up to 220 at a possitive response on a quarter by turning the adjust knob on the back of the meter all the way to one direction, does this help any in deciding which meter I Have? Thank's Art.

You are getting Negative numbers........

The meter reads negative on iron.

Turn the sensitivity down so that it won't false or glitch on electrical noise. Set your mode to discriminate iron mask on or off either one. Keep it out of all metal.

Now try it again.

The meter does not ID in all metal.

I cant change the iron mask, it is an elite model, but I get the picture, I'm starting to think that it is a 180 model, it looks brand new and I can only get it to read no higher than 220. Thank's for your help Art. HH....

See if it will adjust to 180 positive number in disc mode. If this is indeed a digisearch it should work.

You threw me a curve by initially failing to mention that the numbers you were getting were negative.

Well, have to check it out in the morning, grandkids are getting restless and I must take care of their hunger, nothing the drive through cant cure, lol. Thanks for your help and I'll post to you tomorrow and let you know, see ya Art.

After a little thinking, the detector must be tripping on some iron.

Do your test on a clean spot or lay it over a chair or table away from metal objects.

You can cheat and get it close by setting up in all metal before turn on. When powered up , adjust the meter to 124-125 without moving the detector . Do not wave any metal around the coil. Switch over to disc mode and check with a dime. The meter should jump close to 180. Adjust as necessary.

The detector defaults to a startup tone and meter reading of 124-125 or 384-385 depending on which meter is used (provided the meter is calibrated to 180 or 550). This is also the default all metal tone.
This can be handy if you forget to bring a coin along with you on a hunt.

If you can only get it to read 220 then while swinging a quarter back and forth across the coil and trying to get the tones and numbers on the meter to stay steady ( that is done by just swinging the quarter within a inch or so back and forth)try to adjust the control on the back of the meter to 180. Like Art says too that if you have the coil away from any metal when you turn on the detector it should read 125 I believe, if not adjust it until it does before it sees any metal. It is best to leave the sensitivity in auto while doing this.
