NEWBIE NEEDS INFO ON CLASSIC II SL

Fargo

New member
Hi, I was given a Whites classic II sl,Is this a ok basic machine? How deep will i find stuff? Am i wasting my time with this detector or should i look for a different one. What is your opinion on this detector? I like that it dosent have target ID,depth meter and pinpoint mode.I grew up in the 70s,and feel more at home with out all that stuff.Thank you for any input on the Classic II SL.

.... "okay basic machine."

You will not have to move up to anything else right away, and since this unit was given to you, you might as well put it to good use and get all you can out of it. As you noted, it is basic and lacks the Target ID, Tone ID, and Coin Depth reading found on some model, but that's not really needed.

You're in error, however, regarding the lack of a "Pinpoint" mode. The Classic II SL, like the III SL, ID, and IDX Pro, has the ability to be locked in the conventional All Metal mode with a trigger-foreword adjustment, and if you pull the trigger rearward you shift into a momentary All Metal "Pinpoint" mode. The toggle trigger is spring loaded and will return to the center Discriminate mode when released.

While the Classic's have the Pinpoint mode, there will still be a need for a slight coil movement and you can't hover over the pinpointed target for too long due to the autotune in that mode which restores the Threshold audio setting.

The Classic II SL also provides access to the Ground Balance trimmer, should you desire to tweak it for best all-purpose performance for your area.

The Classic II SL operates at the same 6.59 kHz frequency as the other Classic series models, as well as the recently discontinued XL Pro, Quantum series, the current and past XLT, and most of White's detectors through the past quarter-century or more.

However, there is one drawback from making the Classic II SL totally versatile, and that is the circuitry design was based on some earlier approaches which limited the coil selection to the earlier series of coils. The Classic II SL does NOT share the Blue Max series of coils with the Classic III Plus, Classic III SL, Classic ID or IDX/IDX Pro.

You are pretty much limited to the stock 8" coil, but if you take the time to learn the Classic II SL, you will find that it is a very capable coil for general coin hunting.

I outfitted my brother, who got into this hobby with me over forty years ago, and a good friend who had used Tesoro's exclusively since 1986 for hunting ghost towns and the like, and both use the Classic II SL:. It has very good depth of detection and handles iron trash just fine. For the $$$ (and especially in your case) it's a lot of detector with good performance.
