Newbie needs help.....

Post this on a couple of forums because I'm kinda in a jam and need a reply.

The XP Deus just came today and I'm super excited! I just ordered the Starter kit (no remote) and thought I'd read the instructions fairly well. I powered on the headphones and immediately got the number "32" and the menu screen flashing back and forth repeatedly. Decided either the coil or headphones must have needed charging so I plugged in the charging unit for 60 minutes, disconnected earphones and coil from the charger and was now able to cycle through the menu just fine.

Problem. I tested the detector outside for a while in the late afternoon then pushed the - then + buttons. The headphone powered off but the coil continued to flash every few seconds??

Turned the unit back on, did a few air tests this time and repeated the "off" procedure. Again the headphones power down but the coil continues to flash. Is it telling me I need to charge it more?

I just need to get the coil "turned off" so it is not "on" all night.

Appreciate the help

Coil always flashes once it's got a charge.
The only way you can "turn it off" would be to put a piece of electrical tape over the light when you're not using it.
You might read the manual again. :)

Appreciate the quick reply Spchng!! But just so I'm clear on this, the coil LED light is always flashing once charged?? You detect for a couple of hours, turn the headphones "off" and the rest of the day/night the coil LED light will give a steady intermittent flash?? I'm an old 1266X, Tejon, and turn on/off knob kinda guy - just really surprised a charged coil would "flash" all the time when not in use - unless I really misunderstood your reply. Ken

You're right ecoast, gotta read the instructions, which I thought I had (twice). All I could find in the Power Supply section was:
Page 32
"The LED on the coil is on continually when charging is underway.
When charging is complete, the LED reverts to flashing intermittently" (3 seconds ON, 3 seconds OFF)."

I just don't see where it mentions the coil will literally flash ALL the time even when the headphones are "turned off".

I'll keep rereading but if I've missed something somewhere, please let me know.

Ken

Many thanks Ray! Really, I thought it must have been a malfunction or I screwed something up inadvertently in the setup. I just assumed a flashing light means battery drain (granted, a tiny bit) and having the coil flash all the time seemed just plain weird. Regardless, I sleep better tonight I'm not actually leaving the new XP coil "on" all night until I can give it a good first time workout tomorrow. Thanks again!

I leave all my stuff plugged in until packing it to detect...Will not hurt it.

Jim

Thanks again Jim for the advice. I now see how dumb the flashing light question was, (and must have sounded to veteran users) so I really appreciate the help I got from all those who took the time to respond.

People on this particular forum are very helpful to people starting out!

There is NO stupid questions. We all ask and have asked what you call stupid questions......

This is the number 1 board for Deus owners, by far.

You got a core of users here who truly care about others performance, share programs, ideas and tips. Some like CZ share stories of their hunts and if you want to learn, read EVERYTHING that man posts, even the stories give tips.......

AS a new to Deus guy, do not expect to have the Deus "click" in your head right away, IDK I might be dumber than most. But I also have the tendency to regress if I do no9t hunt regularly, mostly my brain gets in the way with doubts....LOL

Learn what the Deus is telling you. take a silver dime or something with you and right before you hunt, listen to the tone testing the dime, then go hunt...Also when you get Andys book read it, and then read it again....LOL I am re reading it now, I seem to pick up more with each read.

Goto metal detecting world dot com and read about the Deus settings there also, very good site.

Start with a basic program learn your machine, get a program that is being used in same/close conditions as your area, then use and mod it for your area...Some you will find never work for you, others, will work from the start. It is part of the fun of deus.

Read the posts here and pick up the tips, search bottlecaps for instance, learn what we do for them......

(Rumor is, XP is coming with an improved bottle cap solution, very soon........)or is it just hope? LOL

Lastely, post about your hunts, what you find, issues and questions. You will grow, you will fall deeply in love with this awesome machine!

Jim

Excellent advice Jim, I've already bookmarked metal detecting world dot com (did not know about that one) and will certainly post hunt results in the future. Ken

Just logged on to say, I just bought an XP Deus and was wondering the same thing.....why does the coil light keep flashing all the time? Thanks to this forum, I found out it is a design quirk! Whodathunkit? I will sleep better tonight myself now.

This is a great forum with a great community feel, please don't forget XP themselves probably have the biggest range of resources out there.
You can see all the official tuitional videos and step by step set up guides on the XP main web site or the regularly updated xp classroom pages.
We now have an XP podcast what you can download onto your phone and listen to while working, driving, chilling etc.

Always feel free to ask questions. The XP is a great machine but to us in the US it does have a different way then what we are use to in a detector. So, asking the questions is the best way not to become frustrated with the wonderful machine that you have to use.

If you have not purchased Andy Sabisch's book on the XP yet it is a good resource that covers the machine in a way that is easy to understand.
