I am still a beginner (about 4 months) but have put in lots of hours in those months.
Today I went coin shooting again and I am having a lot of trouble hearing the deeper targets between all the surface trash targets. I have changed to the smaller coil and still have problems. How do you experienced guys hunt trashy parks? I thought I had a pretty good handle on this machine and now it

Hey Mike,
The only thing I can think of that you can do to hear deeper targets is to reduce the area of influence of surface trash. You can do this by reducing your manual sensitivity until you can hear threshhold return inbetween targets (for somewhat trashy areas). As you know, other areas are so friggin' trashy that no matter what you do, you still get the big null all over the place.
If you go into IM=-16, you still probably have to lower sensitivity to reduce area of influence of surface trash targets so you can see in between them.
Check this out. My friend, who has very few hours of experience on the XS, rejected all metals, and then learned in only wheats, IH's, silver dimes, and silver quarters. He went into a super trashy area with these settings and found a few wheat cents while I was finding nothing while I was in IM=-15. I think the machine does pretty good in super trashy areas even with descrimination.

Hey Mike,
I had to leave but I'm back. Anyway, I am figuring out that the XS responds better to a faster swing speed. I found that targets that sound faint during slow single sweeps are better when you are swinging fast. But if you do fast single swings in trash, you will miss targets because the rate at which your coil passes over the multiple targets is faster than the computer can process each individual signal. So in trash, in order to get the best out of all the signals, it is better to do short, fast, right/left swings within each main swing. For example, in a clean area, my left hand swing would be a single fast swing to the left. But in a trashy area, my left hand swing would be made up of fast little 4 inch double sweeps for good target separation. I start out at point A, and double swing my way to the left with four inch little quick sweeps that make up a general progression to the left. See if you can get that distinctive warble out of the high tones you come across (while in iron mask -15).
In the area type where there are constant nails and constant nulls, you probably have to use IM-16 and Ferrous tones. Unfortunately I cannot give any advice for these settings because I suck big time when it comes to these settings. But there are guys out there that operate in this setting all of the time.

Hey Mike,
The guy to talk to is Bill W. He specializes in rusty nail operation. He uses Ferrous Tones and IM-16 (no discrimination at all). He is able to avoid most nail signals and go for the good signals. He is the guy who found that 1852 quarter with the eagle on it.
