Newbie: MXT or DFX300?

Donna

New member
My husband and I are so confused about all these new metal detectors! We live high in the Colorado Rockies where there are many gold mines and ghost towns. Our wish is to hunt for such items as jewelry and other relics, gold, and coins or tokens. Gold, up here, is plentiful and we'd sure like to find our share! We are looking at the DFX300 and the GMT. Does anyone have advice for us as to which detector would be the better detector for our goals?

Thanks
Donna

Check out the MXT forum some people have had good luck finding gold with it .

The MXT by a long shot Donna. The MXT is superior in the gold Dept., especially with the smaller coil. Gold hunters have been doing well with the 6X10 DD and MXT combo and the DFX is not for beginners. Like Richard said, the 12" conical coil is not the best coil for the DFX either. If you use the SEARCH feature on the MXT forum, a lot of good information will come up with many photos of gold found with the MXT. Good luck.

Donna,

While the GMT is a good gold nugget detector, it lacks everything you might what for coin, token, jewelry. and many relic hunting tasks because it doesn't have discrimination. So, scratch that one from your list. GMT

The DFX, even with the factory "Prospecting" program, isn't really meant to be a nugget hunting tool. Learning to program various changes with a DFX or XLT really isn't all that difficult, however, it does take a little time to learn what these models can do, as well as pick up on their weaknesses. Hitting ghost towns and older sites often means working in and around building rubble and/or brush. For best performance in these conditions or around trash, you're better served with a dedicated slow-sweep detector, and that's not the DFX. You can try to make it work that way, but it can't match a model that was designed to work that way from the start. Personally, I've owned a few DFX's and they never came close to the performance I got from an XLT or an MXT. I'd eliminate the DFX from consideration. DFX

That brings us to the MXT which is honestly one of the best detectors White's has ever produced. very versatile! A very good nugget hunting unit with a smaller coil. My favorite is the 5.3 Eclipse, but I've done OK with a 'Shooter' coil (too small for me most of the time), and if I wasn't using a 5.3 Eclipse (a 6

With no question...MXT. Very straight forward and is still a top end machine. The trick to becoming "one" with the hobby is to enjoy learning your machine (and proper techniques) while finding stuff or not. Good help from the people around here and welcome!

Another vote for the MXT without reservation,

MXT all the way. I have some MXT tips and tricks I have collected I can send you it is about 30 pages in all. There are tips for finding larger gold and the method they use at ganes creek in Alaska to determine if a target is worth digging before you get to it. You really can't go wrong with the MXT quality of build and ease of use. It is just as at home hunting relics or coins as gold. Truly a great machine. Hope to see you on the MXT forum.

wow where are you gettin all that, you should be able to afford a fly swatter

LOL Bowz, I put that fly there to attract you to this forum and it has worked. I could go back to the stick men if you want LOL.....Tom

May I ask then would I be better off getting something like a gold bug 2 or a whites goldmaster v/sat for just prospecting and then save my money for a better coin and relic detector? I live in Ohio where your mostly going to find fine gold with the occasional picker and even rarer nugget. I am dying to get into the hobby. I want to make the best use of my money on a limited budget.

Clyde, is there LODE or PLACER Gold deposits in Ohio? I don't know much about your state, but read somewhere that it is like Pennsylvania,Just "Glacial Drift Gold" left by receeding glaciers that came down from Canada. I think an MXT would be better for your money, because you have more options besides the "Prospecting Mode" . You also have "Coin and Jewelry" and "Relic" modes. The MXT is like 3 detectors in one.

I welcome RedRockNv!

Donna,
Monte above spelled it out about as clearly as possible and he's right on the money. I would suggest the the regular MXT that comes with the 950 (9 1/2") coil (not the MXT 300), and then pick up an Eclipse 6X10 DD or Eclipse 5.3 for nugget hunting. The 5.3 is an excellent choice for trashy areas and ghost town hunting also.
