Newbie looking for a little advice about the Tesoro Silver :)

Hi everyone! My name is Elizabeth. This is my very first post here. I've been lurking and finding some great advice. I was hoping some of you might be able to give me some more advice about the Tesoro Silver. I actually don't have a detector yet as I am brand new to this hobby (although I've been intrigued ever since I saw people at the beach with them when I was little). After reading an extensive amount of reviews, I was thinking of purchasing the Silver as my first detector. There were a few reasons. First, the price is very right. This way, if it doesn't work out for whatever reason, I'm not out hundreds and hundreds of dollars, and I can hopefully re-sell. Although, I really can see myself getting into this. Also, from the reviews I read, even long time users were saying that it easily matched their more expensive detectors. I guess what I'm wondering is, do you guys think that this detector is a good choice for a beginner and, is there any advantage/disadvantage to not having a digital readout screen? I'm sorry this post is kind of long. I really appreciate any input that you guys can give. Thanks!

p.s. I was actually considering purchasing a used Tesoro from the classifieds in this forum. Has anyone here bought/traded from this forum? Is it a good experience/idea? I'm not saying I distrust anyone, but I've always bought stuff on eBay or from an online store, never from a forum. I was just wondering how it has worked out so far. Thanks again!

oops, I also forgot to mention that I was hoping to be able to use this detector for land (looking for relics and coins and such) as well as on beaches for maybe more coins and jewelry? From what I've read, I think it can do both, but has anyone had experience using this detector in both locations? Again, sorry for all the questions, but I do appreciate any help! thanks!

Hi & welcome to the forum Elizabeth, I have had a number in my 20 plus years of detecting and I can honestly tell you that the Silver uMax is a great detector. It will do better than most $400.00 detectors. It is a real joy to use and it is a coin & jewelry magnet. You won't regret getting one. Steve.

I love my Silver. I also love my old Royal Sabre- a tone ID detector-it gives several tones to indicate the probability of the target. I guess it depends on how inquisitivie you are. Is it a gold ring or just a plain ole' pulltab? The Golden umax COULD be an alternative if you're not sure. That way, you could have a little of both worlds and if the trash bothers you, you could continue relying on the tones to at least give you an idea before you dig. Also, the Deleon is about the same price range and has numerical ID as well as probability ID in a screen setup. I mention the Deleon because the tones on the Golden can be confusing to newbies. Then, if you decide that just digging everything is best, you can STILL use one of these detectors without buying another-you'll just have an idea of what you're about to dig. But if you're firm in your mind and realize that NO type of ID is pefect, and, yes you'll have to recover some bad items=you'll love the Silver. You can adjust the discrimination in a pinch. There's even an allmetal switch to go to if you really get serious. Hope this isn't confusing. I just realize that, no matter how much I love my Silver, the trash at times, in certain areas, can be overwhelming.:surrender:

welcome Elizabeth,
The silver is a great machine simple to use and is very powerful.
Most people have no problems dealing with classifieds. I have bought several Items from Richard at Backwoods detectors, he's great to deal with. He seems to always have a list of used detectors
at reasonable prices.

I would also recommend a pair of headphones. Even a cheap pair of Ipod type will help block out some of the outside noise. get better ones as you can afford it.

As for the beach I assume that a fresh water beach is probably OK. a salt water beach could be a problem though.

Good luck, and enjoy

G'day Elizabeth , I ve only been into this hobby for about 6 mths so I'm a realative newbie  Even though Im new to this hobby Im out almost everyday sometimes from dusk till dawn " I just cant put'em down " if I aint in the field learn'n Im read'n an weeding me way through the truths an not so truths that abound , but always learning ...... I quickly learnt that it pays not to read to deeply into the the opinions an views of others and to keep a fairly open mind and that goes for the veiws and opion that Im about to express .

I started off with a Bounty Hunter QD II an I really put the hrs in to learnt the BH but it wasnt my cuppa tea ,I made some ok finds with it but overall I found it to be a very heavy on batterys ,it had quite a slow target response and it pinpointed like a dog add to that it was its poor build quality I wont be going down the BH road again ! although it did have a tone ID goin for it and that was something that I miss'd when I got a Tesoro

So next I brought a used Tejon , now after reading all the reviews and the countless posts on this board and others regarding the Tejon , I was begining to question my purchase even before it had arrived , why ? its a noisy poor performer in iron infested sites , its unstable ,cant handle ground conditions to well , hard to ground balance , the battery housing doors are faulty , it depth is overated ...ect ect .....

Well I found none of this to case with my Tejon ,apart from yeah its a noisy over iron but not a bad as some would lead to belive its actualy a postive because its letting ya know the irons there and alerting you to the possability of masking , an there aint no mistaking a good signal .

My finds increased dramaticly using the Tejon over the same areas I had hunted using the BH , the target response is lightning fast and pinpointing 100% on the $$ every time , now I could finally stop digging bomb craters  thankyou Tesoro

I now have over 300hrs clocked up on the Tejon and am very confident in it , that being said in the first 40 hrs or so the chatter expeirenced over iron infested ghost town sites was at times annoying but that came to pass with time its just the nature of the Tejon

Next I brough a used Eldorado Umax for the wife , I found the Eldo to have a more stable threshold tone and a real breeze to ground balance over the Tejon , the Tejon is by no means hard to GB but its a bit more touchy or tricky'r to get a neutral GB on than the Eldo at least thats what I find , I also reckon the Eldo is just as chatty on the iron as the tejon wheras others say its much quieter I dont find it so , I find the Eldo to be a very good detector same fast response an excellent PinP abilitys good discrimination but it lacks depth when put up against the Tejon .

Ok next I brough a Compadre , I found it to have the same good qualitys of the others although it lacked depth but that was to be expected , If youve read though alota the tesoro posts you will be familiar with the users reffering to the subtle tones or language of the Tesoro's , I can hear the differences in tones on differing targets but it took quite along time to be able to distinguish those very subtle differences in the tones , I would actual prefer tone ID anyday than having to concentrate so hard on almost every signal to hear those very very slight tone differences , I know other tesoro users are going to disagree with me there as prehaps they find it quite easy to pick those subtle changes , I can hear them but its by no means an easy thing to get used to in my veiw and I belive its a drawback of the Tesoro's . I never could get a grasp on the the above tones using the Compadre to me it really was a beep an dig detector , great disc however an very quiet over iron , but I still found myself digg'n heaps a trash in modern trashy sites but it did perform excellent in ghost town sites where I only had to contend with iron but I soon parted with it .

Next came a Silver Umax , at first I wasnt overly impessed with it , didnt really offer much over the Compadre apart from the ability to change coils . Depth was ok in my ground got a little more over the compadre but hardly noticable ..I have 60-80hrs up on it , It may be a personal thing but I felt the Silver was weak in its target swing response when compared to the others its a bit hard to explain , I find it needs a slower swing than the others or you will easily miss targets an it dont hit as hard as the others thats just my feel for it , I will say that I can hear the subtle changes in tone on targets with the Silver ,all in all it doesnt give me a great deal of confidence in it so its on the way out the door

Now Im looking at the Ace 250 , it has alot to offer and is cheaper than the silver Umax , My beleif false it may be has been that the ace is another snozbox just like the BH from all negative reports on its PinP ability ect , fact ? maybe maybe not I reccommend you read this post Elizabeth
http://www.findmall.com/read.php?32,806401

I am looking foward to atleast having to option of the TID as apposed to NONE as offered by the Silver Umax

good luck Elizabeth an take ya time on ya choice !

Hay Elizabath,

The Silver Sabre is great on fresh water beaches and good on most
ocean beaches in the dry sand. Salty wet sand is a problem for
most MD's as well as the Silver.

If you are just looking for coins, there are other MD's that perform well
like the Garrett Ace 250 that sells for a little less than the Silver.
These machines operate at a lower frequency that allows them to
respond better coins.

If you want to include gold jewelry in with your finds, then any Tesoro
that I have used will find small and large gold jewelry, and the Silver
is a great MD for the $$$$.

The displays on the vast majority of MD's give no, or almost no aid in
finding small gold jewelry. That's what I hunt, and I have 4 Tesoro'es.

Happy Hunting,

Tabdog

Welcome, i owned a silver umax its a good detector but i hated the 8" coil because when you get into the eareas whith lots of close together targets its hard to pinpont also the sensitivity cant be turned down much but whats good about it is it has a great all metal mode and is light and has a cool selection of coils among one i would recomend would be the 5.75" you may consider a compadre first but if you buy frome the forum look at the feed back if somone is new they may be scaming you now be prepared to get lots of exersize metal detecting really burns the caloreies i get faint you know you get carried away and forget to eat at least i do but ya the silver is a good detector and if you take good care of it it has a good resale value

this is indeed true but to be fair nor does the thumbing the discrimation on a tesoro help much in ID'ing these targets as they lay hand in hand in the trash range , to extract such goodies you've no other option ya gotta dig trash thats a givin with all detectors as long as the detector has true all metal acceptance to pick up those very low conductors , such as the Compadre an other ED 180 tesoro's I dont see any obvisous advantage Tesoro has over any of the competition that also offer models with true all metal acceptance

But I do see how the Compadre does so well at picking up small gold ect with ED 180 + Operating Frequency 12 kHz an 5.75 coil how could it fail
