newbie id edge ?`s

Quick ? in the id edge.Looking to buy a MD and don`t understand how the Id Edge tells the depth of a target. This will be my first MD and was also wondering how hard of a detector it will be to learn on or should i get something else to start out with?I would like to buy one and have it be a keeper and not something i will grow out of in the near future.thanks in advance for the replies and i enjoy reading the forums here.

Sandrailer the Edge does not indicate the depth in inches, rather the depth is based on signal strength using a scale of 0 to 99. Basically when it comes to coin size targets a reading of 10 is approx 1 inch and a reading of 20 would be aprox 2" deep and so on. Depth indication on detectors that read in inches are based on coin size targets. Because they are calibrated to coins, larger objects generally read shallower than they actually are and very small targets will read deeper. Because of this I actually like Fishers method of using the 0-99 scale. Once you use it for a bit it makes perfect sense.

The Edge is very easy to learn and in my opinion much more than a beginners machine. I have used all of Fishers top of the line units and feel that I am giving up very very little when using the ID Edge. Easy to use detectors with good performance are a Fisher trademark and the Edge is no exception.

I think you have that backwards. A reading of 10 would be 9 inches and a reading of 20 would be 8 inches, etc. A shallow target might read 90, meaning about 1 inch.

That's the way it is on the ID Excel anyway and I believe it is the same on the Edge.

I stand corrected! That what happens when you type faster than you think and don't proof read. LOL

99 is a shallow target and 10 is deep. Sorry about that!

Thanks for the input i just couldn't get the grasp of it till you put it like that......how can you detect a coin at 99 inches?lol.

one more ? What are you opinions on the id edge and the id excel would it be worth the cash to go with the edge over the excel?

then the Edge has the edge because it has a small coil available for it and the Excel does not. As you become more experienced you will find that the small coil will become a welcomed option when trying to find good targets in amongst junk targets.

Definitely get the Edge. I had 2 different Excels before the Edge was released and for my type of hunting they did not have the performance I need while the Edge satisfied my needs very well.
