Hi all,

I'm new to metal detecting and so far I'm really getting a grin out of it. My detector (Minelab X-Terra 70) came in yesterday's mail. So far I've been able to locate a few nails under the living room carpet and some of the wife's jewelry (from her jewelry box) using the high frequency coil. I haven't tried it on the cat yet but probably will later.

My first attempt at really using it will be tonight after I get off work. I have a 3.5 acre lawn I'm going to start on. Then I may go into town and poke around in the park for a bit. I haven't hardly a clue what I'm doing yet but I guess we all have to start someplace. The beginning is always a good choice.

Welcome. I'm sure it will be a good trip. Have you visited the FAQ FAQ page yet??

Welcome. Like you I have ran hundreds of targets in my house under my coil. my little girl loves to do that also. That is the same detector I use and found a wedding band with it today. I will post pictures after I return it.

I have but I need to spend some more time there.

I'm 56 years old and this is the first *real* metal detector I've ever owned. I've had a number of what I consider to be toy metal detectors in the past. This is going to be an interesting new hobby for me I'm sure.

I'm really stoked about it!

Man that is an awful expensive stick to beat a cat with! LOL
Enjoy your new machine and please fill your holes, you do have time. (pet peave)

All I can say is be patient with your progress. You will find some "No Brainers" that are lying flat, close to the surface and not in proximity to iron but a lot of the really good stuff is still in the ground because it is not an easily defined "Good Target". Read the FAQ's and spend a lot of time paying attention to the tones and what the target actually is after you dig it up. Enjoy the journey. I think that too many people get frustrated because they don't find the good stuff right off the bat and blame it on the detector ( I am guilty sometimes ). There are countless variations of targets ( soil condition/composition, depth, position of target, composition of target, proximity to adjacent targets ) that I don't know that we could ever really be done learning. I'll bet there isn't one seasoned detectorist that can honestly say they have never dug a target that didn't suprise them when it was actually pulled from the ground. Have fun and Good Luck to Ya (a little luck never hurt either) ;)

Thanks for the kind words, all.

So far I've been out in my yard. I've found a ripped up aluminum pop can and the end off a garden hose. It's a start.

You guys say, you learn something new every time you go out.

Today I learned that I'm going to want a trowel with a blaze orange handle instead of a green handle. I lifted the green handle one from my wife's garden tools and it somehow slipped out of my back pocket while I was walking. It took me awhile to back track and find it.

It would have been tough to explain that one to her. Honey, I lost your steel garden trowel while metal detecting and couldn't find it even toting a high dollar metal detector! :help:

I better get my own trowel with a holster and a strap.

I've also learned why some like the smaller diameter coils while hunting in trashy areas. The standard coil gets too confused when there's too much stuff in the ground. It can't see in between it as well.

So the six inch coil will be coming to my place soon.

So far I'm liking it! :detecting:

That XT70 is a real nice toy and does a good job finding the goodies! Don't let those cheap detectors you had before influence you, the XT70 is a whole new game of finding buried treasures, does very well with American coinage or any coinage and metal really. I find small BB sized targets with the stock coil at 5", usually junk though, LOL. Good luck and let us know how you are doing. HH, Mike

you'll find it real handy to invest in a probe. my favorite is the garrett pro probe.using it will demostrate how handy it will be.
