Newbie here with great first days out

Digging It

New member
Hello everyone. I just picked up a new tracker IV last week and spent 2 full days swinging it . First day I hit a couple of the local parks with no real luck just a few badly corroded zinc pennys and couple of newer quarters . That night I did a little research and learned about an old swimming hole and resort located on creek that was open back in the 20's . I had heard of it before but had no idea exactly where it was . So I used google earth and just followed the creek and boom there it was just a bunch of old foundations must be 10 or more old cabin spots all scattered on the hill sides . I drove down the next day and its like a jungle there very heavy brush and very steep hills with lots of stone steps around the cabin sites . The spot where you pull in off the road is still used as a swimming hole and is very trashy. The first area I tried was at the edge of the water and I found a ton of newer clad and few copper pennys some where laying out in plain site . probably 15.00 total havent counted it yet . I was little reluctant to climb the hill side since I was by myself and I am disabled ( back injury ) But I noticed a small clearing maybe 8 ft square and decided to chance it . as soon as my coil hit the ground I had a hit and dug it up it was an old missouri mill tax token . next swing I hit a 1917 wheat penny . Then my batteries died and with no spares I had to leave . I came home put in batteries and spent the rest of the day in the backyard. I found an old ring looks like brass with some cheap stones a silver ear ring and about 5.00 in newer coins . Today I'm sitting here at home watching it snow . I will be heading back out to that old swimming hole with a buddy as soon as it thaws . I'll let ya know what turns up there .

I think you've got the teckin fever already! Hope that site pans out for you, it might be a nice little glory hole! I love finding MO tax tokens, they are usually in pretty crusty shape though, dang zinc. Hope you get a chance to get out soon, sounds like your in the same situation that I'm in.

Hi Adam I see from your post that you are in SW Missouri too . What part ? I'm in Newton Co. We have got 16 inches of snow on the flat now and some 5 ft drifts in places and its still coming down. Looks like it will be awhile before I get back to that old camp . I just talked with an old friend that gave me permission to M.D. about 6 acres that has been used for 50 + years as a hunters trading spot where they trade and sell all kinds of stuff guns, knives, traps , dogs ect and back in the day they would have big stake crap games there Most people who go there camp for the weekend on the grounds. I can remember passing the spot when I was little boy and It would be full of people . I'm 56 years old so its seen alot a traffic . Best part is its only a mile and a half from my house. My friend says it has never been searched . Now I am really amped about getting back out with the M.D.

Greene county here. You are pretty close to me. We have a local club here, you should search the web for "417 relic hunters", the forums name is "My T....... S..." can't name the site cause it's another forum, don't think I'm allowed to mention it. Don't go to the 417relichunters.com website, nobody uses that one. It's a good way to get in touch with local hunters. I think we have a few people from your direction that come to our monthly meeting, you should check it out if your able. Supposed to be a meeting tonight, cancelled for some reason... It's the first tuesday of every month normally.

On another note... I think I need a bigger rain guage

Stop it, your making me cold. Sounds like you might have a really sweet place to hunt, might even be a virgin site ! Congrats on the new machine and hope you thaw soon!
