Newbie here with an Ace 250 Question

Hello!

Actually, I'm more than a newbie...I'm an embryo who's about to purchase a Garrett Ace 250 from Dixie Metal Detectors and need to know if I'm making a good decision.

David Keith answered all my questions and was very pleasant and helpful. I know zilch about detectors so have been reading many of the posts on this forum. From that, I was able to narrow it down to two detectors and was pleased when one of Mr. Keith's suggestions was the Ace 250 as it was also one of the two I am considering.

I recently acquired a cabin in the woods of Western Maine where once stood a large main lodge and many other guest cabins. The main lodge burned down in 1909 and only a few other cabins are still standing but most have not been used in decades....with the exception of some deer hunters. This area is high in mineral mines as well (not sure if this matters or not in selecting a detector).

I would love to have any advice you would like to share!

Peace out, :super:

Annie

THe Ace is a good detector for newb and expert alike. I use mine for all sorts of things, like impromptu jaunts or barkchip banging. Get it and get busy.

Whoa! Thank you for all of the information in the emails you and others have sent me on the ACE 250! I'm sure I will eventually understand what 'coil' and the rest of that stuff means :) I'm going to place my order for it right now. Maybe I'll even find my husbands forest ranger ring he lost just days after I gave it to him...grrrr!

Annie, Here is a much better deal on the Ace 250. $212 plus you get your choice of 5 free gifts. I bought mine here plus 2 other peopele I know. Welcome to the board.

Better Deal

Annie,
When you get your 250 you husband will be so lonely. There you are leaving early in the morning coming home at dark. Dirty fingernails and knees. Your husband will be talking to you but all you can hear is beep beep beeeeeeep. You will become a battery hog. The only AA batteries in the house will be in your detector or pouch! He then sees you finds soaking in the sink. 20 pull tabs, 3 nickels, 10 dimes, 4 quarters, 2 hot wheels and a bag of chips you found under a bench. You tell him that your just learning and you'll be bringing home more and better stuff. Your husband just shakes his head. You'll be watching the Travel channel only imagining yourself there swinging your 250. Who cares about the Mayan temples! This is just the beginning!

Too funny! However, knowing my husband, we will be fightng over who gets to operate it....and will soon own two detectors....his and hers!! ;)

Hi Annie,
Welcome to the forum 'n' the greatest hobby in the world.
Hey that's a great name. (that was my mum's name) Only she was always little Annie as she stood at 4feet 11in.

We started that way at first it was my Ace250, then it became ours, then it became every 15 minutes, then it became every 30 minutes.
Guess what's next?

Hi Scotland!

Love the metal detecting smilies! We just got together with friends for pizza and beer and I explained how excited I was about ordering my new metal detector....after beer number I was still being teased...after beer number two I think everyone at the table has decided to give it a try!

Everyone has a hobby. It might be watching soap operas. But it seems like you mention metal detecting and peoples imagination sees a homeless person scrounging for pennys. I would like to say now that I find many dimes!!!!!!!!!!!! I was into radio controlled car and airplanes years ago. It never once paid me back. At least I can make battery money metal detecting. Also if you have a 200 target day of digging your body gets a work out!

[/quote]Just yesterday I had some kids at the park following me like the Pied Piper. One of them told the other I do it because I need the money. Little do they know I have a good job. One asked me if I have a house. Too funny.

Should have told him like I told a kid one time. I said that I lived in a cardboard box down by the dump and lived on barbecued rat. Should have seen him and his buddies evaporate. :)

Uncle Willie, I sure do wish I had two Garrett Ace 250's!!! I have a girl friend who is always wanting to use my detector. Most of the time she is digging up my coins for me here in New Jersey. I wish I did not have to dig so much metal junk!!!!
I bought my Ace 250 from a dealer in Florida. But now I think I will look for a store around here. It took me several month to get it work right!!

That's ingenious of you. Welcome to the forum. I don't think I want to MD with you. You are too shewed. You would end up with all the loot.

G'day Annie.
David is a first class dealer. I live in Australia and had the pleasure of buying a Pocket UniProble from his about 18 months back ( I don't use it now because the Ace is so accurate at pinpointing) I had a bit of a problem with it, and David couldn't do enough to help me out. Like I said, he is first class all the way!
I assume that you may not have mentioned the fact that you sound like you may want to use the Ace in what seems like mineralised ground as suggested by the comments you made about the mines nearby. If the ground is mineralised, then I would suggest that the Ace may not be the machine for you, as the Ace has a fixed ground balance and will not cope very well in mineralised conditions. May I suggest that you contact David again and talk to him again about it, with this in mind. He WILL look after you and give you an honest suggestion!
Good luck.
Mick Evans.

(EDIT: Mike, I read your post after posting my own...Hats off to you!)

As much as I love the ACE 250, there is one thing you should know, especially since you have mentioned mineral mines. The ACE 250 is pre-set at the factory with an average setting for ground balance. This may be a consideration when buying a detector. I have found it to be a little more susceptible to coke (coal, not Coca Cola) and "Hot Rocks" which are minerals that tend to give false signals on the ACE. I know this is contrary to what Garrett claims; I am only speaking from my own experience with the unit.

I also have a Garrett CXIII which features both Fast Track automatic ground balance and manual ground balance. I do not get the false signals when using it in the automatic mode. You might want to consider buying a unit with an adjustable ground balance.

I think the ACE 250 is a great starter unit, but it does have its limitations.
