I have read quite a bit about metal Detecting but I have never really done it. I just got a Bounty Hunter IV for Christmas and don't know if it is a good one or not. I mean I know that the top ones are Mine-lab, Tesoro, Garret and Whites. But is the Bounty Hunter worth using it seems a little I don't know kiddish? So basically I am looking for any kind of help. From the actual detector and where to look and how to distinguish the tones.. If you want to help me out then feel free to message me here or on my email i do check my email more often.

The Bounty Hunter IV is a very good detector to start with. Been detecting 33 years. Have owned about 40 or 50 detectors. Own 10 now. One is a Bounty Hunter IV. Learn that detector. It is a very good coin getter. After using it a while, if there is experienced detectorist in your area, be sure to ask questions here.....Jack

Welcome to the forum, make sure you read as much information as you can on this forum.

Heya thecowboysheart! Welcome to the addiction.

The very best detector is the one you get to take out swinging. The Tracker IV may not be the deepest or have the most features but with that said, most coins and jewelry are found well within the T-IVs depth range. You will most likely find enough coins and valuables with it to afford upgrading later.

It is definately NOT a kids toy and within its depth range is capable of finding just about anything one of those more expensive detectors can find, regardless of the brand name.

In the beginning dig every signal and you will quickly start to get a feel for what your detector is telling you. Practice, practice, practice and don't get discouraged. Keep at it and the finds will start coming.

Good luck to you and Happy Hunting in the new year ahead.

Thank you for all the messages back I went out today and did some in my own yard and found 48 cents. I think I am starting to understand some of the blips and bleeps, I cant wait till the ground thaws a little so I can dig easier. I am also interested in metal detecting for gold. Does anyone have any -ideas if the BH IV is good for that also. If anyone wants to chat the can add me on facebook just use my email thecowboysheart@yahoo.com and or -You can give me a shout on my cell816-678-5031

Hi, just got my a detector for xmas and was wounding were to go for for starter like me to get to know the detector. And place that I can not, just looking for info.thanks

If you have access to a lawn or something similar, try burring various coins horizontally facing at various depths a foot or so apart and make a map of what and where you burried. Then use your detector to scan over each and learn that your machine is telling you.

Most government school yards will yield targets and most are open to metal detecting. Many public parks are also open but be sure to check with local governments prior to digging. In Washington State parks, a digging tool may not be wider than 2" and the detector is not allowed to emit any noise that may be heard by others. Check with your local authorities.

Be sure to follow the code of conduct whenever metal detecting.

I am new to metal Detecting also. I did read 100s of reviews and it seems to be one of the best detectors for under 140 dollars new. It is kinda like the Tesoro Compadre there is not a lot to it but you get a lot of bang for your buck according to reviews..I couldn't find many negative reviews out of 100s.. If it was a cheap one it would have a 1 year warranty. The good ones have 5 year warranty's. Tracker 4 has 5 year warranty and you can change coils on it. I am expecting one today along with a Compadre.
