Hi Folks... I'm a newly registered participant from Western, NY. My current focus is to specifically locate USGS Benchmarks as a Search and Rescue training exercise. My intent is to plot selected USGS Benchmarks on my TOPO maps and then attempt to find them and compare my GPS position to the plotted UTM Coordinates on the TOPO. I DO NOT currently own a metal detector so, that being the 1st priority, will also be my first of many questions I will likely pose on this Forum! (I'm not anticipating getting into finding coins or deeply buried items in the foreseeable future as my SAR project will likely take me a considerable amount of time). I have been told that many of these monuments have been buried below grade, either deliberately or through years of natural overfill. I can't imagine that they will be much deeper than 6" - 8" below grade but this is also something that active metal detector users may be able to shed some light on? Thanks for any help anyone may be willing to offer. Take Care and Stay Safe... SAR-1 🇺🇸 :)
