I had just started metal detecting with my son last month. Went out this weekend and found this in middle of my field. Any ideas on what it is and age? I have seen the 3 rings one before. Thanks in advance!!!

Nice find!
Welcome to the forum and relic hunting! And I think it is SO awesome it is a father and son adventure.
There are several one groove civil war bullet types. The one you found looks like it has a solid base. Maybe a British Sharps .577 cal. Yankees used them. Or maybe a Colt .44 - hard to tell the size in the pic. Hopefully some else will chime in. What state are you in?
Here's hoping there are more finds out in that field!

It was found in Indiana. I included another picture with a different marking I noticed. Thanks for all the info

I found a 32 caliber a couple months ago that looks like that one. It looks like civil war era by the patina! My guess is 32 caliber pistol bullet! The groove on the side is probably a rifling, but it must have not hit anything because it has no swelling from impact. Although, on second look the rifling looks like its angled the wrong way? Maybe someone that's more of an expert can chime in here! Great find!!! Congrats to you and your son!!!
