Newbie Dumb Question!

While learning my detector, I have noticed that ever so often I get a signal (usually a 8-10.."B") that I will pass the coil over a few times to Semi-pinpoint, then I press and hold down the imageing button and try to pinpoint the target.....But there is nothing there.....This has happened (only in my yard) several times.
On occasion I will start over, get the beep (8-10) and re-pinpoint with the image button and maybe see a "B" at 2-4".
This happened yesterday afternoon on 1 specifictarget.
After getting a 8.5 @ 2 inches, recheck and get 8.5 @ 4 inches, (both in the "B" range,I decided to find out
what was going on.
I spread a cloth on the ground and dug a 12 inch diameter hole about 8 inches deep......Scanned the hole and yep it was still there, except it moved about 2 inches out of the range of my hole I had dug.
After 2 more diggings and getting the same thing, I filtered the dirt put it back in the hole and reached a conclusion. (maybe I am wrong) If so Please submit what you think I am doing wrong!
My conclusion is that I am infested with a species of mobile subterrainal signal emitters

I am just learning my 1500 so I will not be much help. You might have some interference electrically or whatever. Try reducing your sensitivity. When you swing make sure you are getting a repeatable signal, and when you pinpoint make sure that you are to the side of the target, then, push the pp button and swing into the target. Also try to stay consistently parallel to the ground and at the same height. If you are getting a repeatable signal,( I also assume belltone) and your d-tec is not out of whack, then believe me you got metal. This is one of those situations where a pipointer probe might help too. If you are getting a signal maybe it is a rock or something that does not even resemble metal. Thanks Lar
you might have it on my pinpointing method, I'll try tomorrow again after work.
I am going to get to the bottom of this thing. this has only happened in my yard, So I do not suspect my 2500.
My sensitivity was at nine (factory), I read an old post of Bill's and his recommendation of 6-7, so I set mine up this way and will try again tomorrow. The same message said about holding the coil to the ground before you press pinpoint.
I was not doing that, but I will tomorrow.
You're right if it says metal, there is metal there.
When I get through with that area, I'll have passed "My Yard 101" no matter how many semesters it takes.

Yeah set your sensitivity at 6 or 6.5. When pinpointing move clear off the target, press pinpoint and move back over the target and center the target. This is crucial. Watch the blocks at the top of the display ( signal intensity ) and when they line up all the way across you are centered and the target will be under the center of the small hole in the center of the coil. Also make sure the first wind of your cable goes over the top of the shaft and is snugly wound. I tape mine straight up the shaft a foot or more with electrical tape.
Also you can turn the threshold down to a slight hum or no sound. Keep your coil off the ground except when pinpointing unless there is a lot of trash then pinpoint with the coil an inch or so off the ground.

Thanks Bill, I am going to use these suggestions when I get back home this afternoon.

I think all newbies go thru that deep target that isn't there..Methinks you are hitting the edge of a large deep signal( waterpipe, coffee can or perhaps a 57 chevy). as you target seems to move rusty object comes to mind. If your target doesn't repeat just move on. Ghost signals come with the territory and experienced operators learn to disreguard them. Myself went home and got a shovel and two foot deep found a crushed old copper teapot at about 2 feet.Everytime I go out I catch one or two, but just diseguard. It takes time and will come with experience..

I went back to my spot and pinpointed by putting the coil on the ground first away from target area, then pressing the pinpoint button, and going in slow looking for max signal and min. depth.
Tried this on several spots...OK..I can pinpoint pretty accurately now. Even picked up a couple of quarters and a few pennies. I can recognize that belltone now
I was fooled by one penny (it gave a 8.5)...Thanks again, you folks saved weeks of frustration.
