I started this last summer when one day on the beach I noticed several old coins surface after a storm and I started wondering what it would be like to metal detect, well needless to say wifey bought me a M D for x-mas and I haven't got to the beach yet but I did play in the front yard where some recent sewer work has left me with a alot of fresh dirt, so I wanted to get some practice with this new toy and commenced to detecting in the front yard. I ended up with 2 old pennies and a 2 ounce fishing sinker in about 15 minutes. Pretty cool, although it's not a major haul I was very impressed on how well the unit worked, awesome stuff, I can't wait to try it on the beach utilizing the things I learned here, lots of practice ahead.
I think I'm hooked.

I know that you guys on the board don't like them, but I got a Bounty Hunter QD2. It seems to work well but I have nothing to compare to, I do think it will be a good economical way to break in to the hobby and I can always pass it on to a youngster in the family after I've struck gold...

I didn`t hunt the beach with mine, But I hit alot of demo and construction sites. I call it chasing the bull dozer because I had the best luck where soil had been moved around. The photo is of my QD2 silver finds over 4 or 5 years, I also found at least 100 wheaties and some silver jewelry. I loved my QD2, now that I`m back in the hobby I`ve bought a Excal for the beach and a Sov. for my dry land hunts.
Just like any detector learn the machine and it will produce.
Good Luck!!
