Newbees first chest deep water hunt

Been MDing about 2 months, and here in Indiana not many beaches to choose from. Our county campgrounds has a 25 acre lake, a clear water gravel pit that filled in with water back in the late 1800's. It only has about 100yds of beach so its not much. I had been wading knee deep with my Ace 250 but I didn't like useing it close to water. So I got a cheap-o underwater MD to start out with, better to have that than take a chance on ruining my 250. Figured to upgrade next year to a better UW MD. Anyway I didn't find allot in the 1-1/2 hrs I hunted, but I didn't get skunked. 3 things that I couldn't understand the signals for, was the 3 heavy pieces of rock. I assume they are some type of iron ore. In the light they have tiny particles that glittered in the light. Anyone have any idea if they are iron ore, or something else.

They are called hot rocks, sensitive detectors get them all the time. You did heaps good, there's one small looking item there, looks like some sort of earing? What type of cheap detector was it? It seems to be sensitive!

I hunt fresh water. Usually when you see a coin that is really black like that one on the right it is a silver coin rather than clad. What's the date on it?

Any place that has been in some use since the 1800's will have more interesting finds. You will discover with more experience you will really be surprised how much better you will get. Keep going and take more pictures. Continue looking for current and old swimming holes. They may be small but you may be the first one in the water. If you get into the u/w detecting and get dive qualified you may find more in the slightly deeper water. Pay close attention to the swim platforms. Look for old photos of where people used to vacation and swim. Lastly keep more of the "junk" than you might think is valuable. Sometimes the junk proves to be worth something later when you finally identify it. I am very excited for you being brand new into the hobby. Where in Indiana are you? I grew up near Columbia City but live in N.C. now. Best to you, Mike.

Well, UW and allot others where right. My plan didn't work. My 2nd outing I completely submerged the underwater MD, about 1/2 later it went hairwire...Got a full refund, only was out the 97cents for shipping. I will return though, with what I have no idea.

If you are only going to detect fresh water, you have a lot more choices of low to mid priced UW detectors, that are good values, than if you work the highly mineralized salt and black sand ocean water.

Ya, here in Indiana, so it would be just fresh water. There is really only one lake close with a beach, so there is really no need for me to spend BIG bucks, thats why I went with this cheapo from Walmart that cost $98. now if I was close to an ocean like most on this Beach forum are then I could see spending $500+ on one. But the beach I have to search would not justify spending big bucks for a UW MD.

Have you considered placing the Ace 250 head in a plastic bag (double that), then into a canvas bag, and hanging that around your neck?
If you are hunting waist deep water that would work just fine.

Want to go deeper?
Modify a hard hat and mount the detector head on it ... protected from splash by a plastic bag of course.
Sure ... you will look silly but think of the money you have saved and the things you will find.

Nice goin M8! Just my $0.02, Have you take a look at DP Pirate, For $299 water resistaht, 2.4 freq. DEEP! Ck. it out G/L!
