NEWB Question

Hi everyone, I'm new to the hobby and I'm having a little bit of trouble determining good signals on my AT pro. I've been practicing for over 100 hours in pro mode and I thought I had it down for the most part, but I guess not. I've noticed on the coins that I've found, that it's a consistent high tone that doesn't taper off and has very little-to-no static around it.

But,

For example, let's say I go over a signal with the reading between 76-80. It'll give me that High tone, but then as I continue to cross over it, it goes down to the mid range tone. The majority of these signals tend to be bottle caps, but I find myself digging them nevertheless-just in case. I do utilize the iron audio and my discrimination. Is the basic rule of thumb that unless the tone is warm-sounding and tight then it's trash? (Generally speaking)

Also, I'm sure it depends on the item, but do relics sound different than coins? That's the other problem I'm having because I'm not wanting to pass up any relics or rings so I'm digging almost anything that is in their respected ranges and sounds decent.

Thanks for any thoughts or advice. Hope this makes sense haha

Welcome Bulldog! (Generally speaking) you are correct. Those sweet sounding high tones in pro zero are almost always a good target. Oh, a crushed bottle cap does frequently sound pretty good as does pieces of copper and a few other things. Bad targets often have a broken/ratty sound on their edges. Good coin size targets have that tight and smooth high tone. As you may know or learn, certain coins and most relic's are site relative. If you are hunting a spot that has the age for I H cents, as an example, you will need to dig some of those so called iffy signals. And the same applies to relic's such as buttons, bullets, buckles and so on.

As far as jewelry, most all silver jewelry fall into the high tone coin range. Gold, however, can be found down in the foil range all the way up into the penny range. I've had a few detectors throughout my 40 + years with this fun hobby and in my humble opinion the tones on the A T Pro are in a league of their own. Good luck, HH jim tn

You are probably using a DD coil. All DD coils pretty well read bottle caps as good sounding signals. The fact that you have observed a slight reading difference on caps is a good observation for you. For deeper bottles cap/coin sounds, often times if you stamp on the ground above them, you break up the rust halo around the cap, and it reads iron. Of course if it doesn't change, it's probably a coin. Now this stamping technique works quite well, and others have also experienced success! However, some will disagree. I have used this method for over 20 years, and believe me, it really works!

If you get the chance to try a concentric coil, you will notice it giving a better ID towards the bottle cap ID. I prefer hunting with a concentric coil, especially for coin hunting. A concentric coil gives more accurate ID, is much easier to pinpoint with and works extremely well in low mineralized soil. I am also including instructions on how to pinpoint with a concentric coil.

Dears . My experience with at pro for 9 months .. put it on zero mode always and the standard mode better than pro mode . Regards

Thanks so much for the responses so far everyone-great info. Jim tn, where in MN did you visit recently? I am from up there, but live in TX now.

My wife and I both grew up in Moorhead. For those of you that may not know where Moorhead is, it is right across the Red River from Fargo. Bulldog, we have been going to the Park Rapids area and staying on Big Sand lake for about 30 years or so now. What part of the state are you from? HH jim tn

Very cool. I grew up in Rochester and moved down here in 2010. I try and head back at least once a year to fish and see family. I brought my AT Pro home with me in May and found an I H fatty at an old schoolhouse site.
