Hey all, I am a newbie in the metal detecting field, and just got my first detector. Went out the other day for the first time and was able to find about 5 pennies and 2 dimes in a couple hours. I know that's not much, but I have never used a detector before and was recommended the E-Trac if I was going to spend a lot of time out in the field. I appreciate any tips or pointers along the way in my involvement with the forum, and hope to be pros like some of you guys someday.

Thanks for the welcome RB. I have always wanted to get more involved with detecting, and I am really looking forward to finding some good stuff. Now I just need to figure out where the best places are in my local area to begin.

well im sure you will find good places. sometimes the research is as fun as actualy detecting. iv found a site here in texas that even the historians have yet to locate so you never know what youl find when your looking for a place to hunt.
there are tricks to finding good places but for now i would focus on learning how to use your detector so when you find the good places you can hunt with proficiency.

I live in South Texas myself RB. I think you are right about learning the detector first though. I just need to stick with the beach for now and move to other things as I learn more.

ah south texas. well im southeast texas east of houston.
go to the map forum and to texas and then youl have a starting point. ill send you a link or two of some better map sites when i get home tonight.
learn how to use google earth and topo maps if you dont already know how.

as for settings on the e trac i would go with what most the guys on here recomend.
my settings are very radical compared to most of what the forum members run. so until your comfy with things il keep my settings out our talks lol. but if you want to see them you can search for my old post and find them.
use the search button it is a great way to find info on here. most ? you have have been asked already so read read read lol.

There's a lot of very experienced treasure hunter's in this forum that can help you through the learning curve.
Many of these long time detector owner's will also tell you that the E-Trac is the best machine ever made - by any company!

A lot of people also told me that it takes about 100 hrs. to get really proficient with the E-Trac.
I have approx. 100 - 120 hrs. with my ET now and things are really starting to fly out of the ground - so I would say they were right !

One of the best things you can do - if you don't already have a copy - is to get Andy's book on the Minelab Explorer & E-Trac - it's a piece of gold !

Good Luck with your new ET ! --- Mark

yea et ohio im with those guys it is the best iv ever used in my 25 years of the hobby. when i get home after a hunt il lean mine up against a wall and stair at it in awwww. il look at my wife and say things like damn that detector is amazeing or that sucker is magic. even after a year of useing it i still pick it up and just look at it and wonder how it can pull a nickel at 14 inches. gods made that detector or something. lol

welcome and like et and rbholt80 said just stay with it and you'll see it only gets better as time goes by. don't worry about all the programs out there for now and just use the pre-set ones for now. get used to it and you will find that the other stuff will just come as you go on.

HH to ya!

Sorry, for the No Text post, new guy to the forum and Etrac also, with that said this is the best detector I have used in 30 years. The learning curve can be steep for some (very few) and you will love working with the sounds to let you know what you are about to uncover. Definately the book by Andy is great. Go to the video sites on the Minelab on the web and check out the ones with audio. The best lesson will be on the beach, easy digging until you get used to the sounds. Good luck. Stick with it you will love it.
