New Xterra 70

history hunter

New member
Just recently bought an Xterra 70 with almost a full compliment of coils... (5) Which coil(s) are best for beaches , There is plenty of black sand just under the surface.
My first time out on the beach I had many false signals and only two good ones. Many thanks for any advice.

Cheers.

your laughing. Using beach mode with the sensitivity turned down a bit or prospecting mode which is what I use combined with a DD coil will give you good results. A steady swing speed will help alot as well so dont go too fast.
Cheers!

List the coils you have.

When you get a target take it out of track. If it don't pinpoint then X the target. Just my Openion. Black sand beaches are very tough to hunt and I hunt on one of the worst ones and it has small iron targets that give a pos ID number up around 30 to 40 when you are in Dis. mode. That really drives you crazy. Prospect mode the small iron sounds good gives a nice Zip Zip audio and you have to hunt in beach mode where you don't have Iron mask. It is so bad you can't hunt in prospect mode with iron mask. I hope the beach you hunt ain't that bad. If it is, brother I feel for you. :D: :D: HH Later Jerry aka Tinfoil

I set mine up just like Tinfoil says and usually the sens at 15 but have been able to get it to 17 on some spots. This gives me no falsings and runs deep and smooth. Any higher sens and the detector will let you know with alot of falsing. This is on the ocean beaches I hunt here in NJ.
I like the 10.5" round high freq DD coil the best on the beach. Mine puts the numbers for coins up a bit higher, like a quarter will be either 44 or 46 and so on.

Coils I have.

6" Concentric 7.5khz
9" Standard Stock 7.5khz
9" Concentric 3khz
9" Concentric 18.75 khz
10" x 5" Elliptical DD 18.75khz

There appears to be alot of iron in large lumps of black sand all stuck together too. It's a UK beach called Blackpool.
I'll be going to the beach this Sunday when the tides are right again and will try out your suggestions.

Thankyou very much to everyone for your most welcome comments & suggestions which I shall certainly try.

Cheers

10" x 5" Elliptical DD 18.75khz is the coil to use. On some of the beaches I hunt there is significant iron. The X70 will help by giving you a signature for iron. On many detectors iron pieces will ID as a high coin depending on shape and size. On the X70 much of this iron will wrap around from -8 to +48, an important clue to pass over these targets. So try her in All Metal first to see how it does. Sensitivity to start around 15, and like Tin says GB in Beach Mode with Tracking on till you find a target. Coil one inch off the sand, consistent flat swings of the coil, no lifting at the end of the swing.

Many thanks to everyone, I'll swap coils immdeiately... hopefully I'll have some decent finds to post in the next couple of days or so.
I'ts a very good beach if you know where to detect from what I've seen. Plenty of Victorian rings etc have been found.
As far as I know there should be a solid silver cigarette case (signed) from Adolf Hitler somewhere on the beach.. It was thrown off the pier
by a clown when war was declared. The clown had been presented with the cigarette case by Hitler in the 1930's when doing a tour
of Germany. To my knowledge it has never been found. Many detectorists go on the beach at every opportunity to try and find it..
I've seen two or three that regularly stay around the piers... :detecting:
