new xlt

Well-known member
My new xlt (well atleast its new to me ) just arrived.I ahev to admit after glancing at the owners manual: I more imtimidated than I thought I would be. I have been using a garret treasure ace 300 . I have had pretty good success with it ; but it was easy to operate. I just had to turn it on, and watch the display and audio and decide whether or not to dig. No programming. I sure hope I catch on to it quickly. I have become addicted to thing and dont want to get discouraged .Any help from anyone on getting started will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

first, use the preset programs that the factory has supplied and put everything else on the "backburner." You can't eat everything on the buffet at once, trying to "digest" all the info about the XLT and putting it to use is the same situation....take your time, and remember that the XLT will produce for you more and more as you learn it...HH Richardntn

Not real sure about how to add to previous message;but here goes.Took my xlt out for the first time today.Didnt set the world on fire; but I did manage to find 3 qtrs and a nickel. Not to mention the usual pull tabs;and oh yeah a head gasket! The pin pointing is going to be a breeze, I did manage to learn how to do that. Not sure on the target id though. Every time I would verify a target by a cross; thee seconnd sweep usually gave a different target id.Why is that? The park;I previously hunted with my garrett 300. It is very trashy, lots of pull tabs, twist offs and aluminum cans.Almost killed my self the first hour or so.Got a few ghost holes. Great target till :i dug it, then nothing.Tried my new vibra 560. It wasnt much help. But I will learn how to use it.Looking forward to mastering this machine. It will take some time; but I will "getter done"..

Steve, use the Jewelry/beach program. It seems to hit on gold better. You can forget avoiding aluminum as it will always show up unless you notch it out and then you miss too many other targets. Try and remember which VDIs pop up with the pull tabs and take a chance and not dig those numbers. Anything in the bottle cap range is worth digging as some nice gold rings are in that range. Yesterday within 2 minutes of starting, I got a 60 reading and when I dug it, it was a .925 silver pinkie ring! Go figure. Anything in the 9-10 range can be 10K gold so you never know. Only experience will help you. After you get some swing time under you, go to this site http://66.51.97.78/jb/programm.html and load the Coinist's Silver program. You eliminate most of the junk and my finds increased dramatically using this program. Loading a program is the most confusing part of the XLT but sit outside in the shade with the manual and slowly read through everything and it will come to you. Don't worry. Nothing is saved until you make it so and even then you can load another program over it if you made a mistake. I love the XLT. In fact, I have 2! Let us know how you do.

Well; I got out for the 2nd time with the xlt. I went to a school I had previouly been hunted with my garrett ace 300. I found 6 qtrs, 8 dimes, 2 nickels,11 pennies, and a lock.I didnt think that was too bad, considering I had just been there a few days before. I am still learning of course; but the xlt is getting easier. The hardest thing for is getting use to the weight. My garrett only weighs about 2 1/2 lbs and the xlt about 4 1/2 lbs. My arm and shoulder can sure feel the difference. They hurt. But like everything else;I'll get use to it.

This site will help you with some programs for your XLT.

Just copy and paste to your address bar or type it in as it is. Good Luck

Third time is a charm. Went to same place I hunted yesterday. I got another 9 qtrs, 1 dime, 4 pennies, 2 campaign buttons,a what is it? and a silver ring/with stone. I wouldnt thought I'd find that much so quickly.the xlt seems to get easier each time I use it. I really like the pinpointing and depth . I have pics and will upload them later on.

I have been using my White's Spectrum XLT for 5 years now and just recently, purchased a Minelab Explorer 11 after hearing so much
interest in it.
I am going to search a 200 year old barn tomorrow and will be taking
my faithful, XLT.
Stay with the preset programs and experiment for a while. I find the
beach setting useful in any terrain.

Good Luck.

I have some pics that I wanted to post, but it wont let me because they are too big. It says max. size is a 160k and the pics are 430k.Just in case anyone is interested,I can email them.
The ring is kinda neat. My best find so far.
