New member
I have just bought a garrett 250 i went out once so far, all i can find is junk, cans can pieces i have tryed different settings and still all i get is junk. I have a few old houses and other places to look but can't find anything with value, I realize that something has to be there to find it. But it does not detect between finds good at all is there a way anyone can help me with this
Thanks alot.

Have you bench tested your unit yet Harvey? You can also throw some coins and various other items on the ground or better yet bury them, making a test garden for yourself. I would try this before jumping to any conclusions. How's your sweep? Are you sweeping or swinging? In other words are allowing your coil to lift off the ground at the edge of your swing? Are you overlapping your sweeps covering the ground you are hunting well or are you zigzgging"? How is your sweep speed? Is it relaxed and slow, or is it tense and fast? All of these things could be a factor. It is possible the machine could have a problem, but more likely that you just need practice with good technique and patience. I hope this helps. HH

Welcome to the forum Harvey51. As Lightstryder stated slow, level, overlapping sweeps with the coil is the way to go. Nothing substitutes for "stick time". I know it can be frustrating at first but with practice and patience the good stuff will come. I have the Ace 250 myself and I really think it is a great machine. A couple of questions for you. Which mode are you hunting in? What do have the sensitivity set at? If your machine came with the instructional DVD watch it a few times. If not I believe it is on the Garrett website as well as you tube. There are many good instructional videos on you tube. Keep at it and soon you will be finding all kinds of neat stuff.

Good luck and HH.......

Welcome to the forum Harvey, I suggest you use coin mode and nnotch out nickel and run it for awhile and listen for the belltone, and add it back later once your more comfortable with it, the ace250 is a great machine you'll love it just give it time!

Thanks so much for the replies, I am running it in coin mode. I tookl out the penny once or twice but still doing the same. I thought i was doing my sweep good but i am going out again tomorrow and i will try all the things that i nice people have suggested. Im not going to give up on it yet, So i will try all of your suggestions

Again thanks alot

The sensitivity setting is what it comes on when i turn it on, although i have turned it down a couple times. I feel it is a good mach. Hopefully practice will make perfect!!

Don't forget Harvey that you can easily go back to factory settings with most Garretts if not all of them just by pushing and holding the power button for about 2 or 3 seconds. You should hear a double beep and presto back to normal, so don't be afraid to tweak that thang! :super:

Welcome to the forum Harvey. I too just got my ace 250. But did get to use a friends ace 250 and he had me test it on stuff on the ground like a nail, penny. gold ring; pull tab a bunch of stuff first.. Then we went to a play ground the first time , he said it was easy to dig, (wood chips) and it had a ground cloth about 4" to 6" under the chips. Found some coins Pennies and a dime and then some kind of charm from a chain I think. He also took me to an old field where a rail road had been.... found my first rail spike.. but the best for me was the beach. easy to dig (use a cat box litter scoop cheep $.97) I only spend about an hour there at a time but have always found coins. along with other stuff I dig out to help keep the beach clean. So, if you can, try playgrounds....and other easy stuff and NEVER GIVE UP Dan'l

OK.....find new places to hunt. I would never hunt or suggest anyone with a new detector hunt areas with a lot of junk. Try some soccer or baseball fields. use only your screwdriver to pinpoint and retrieve those targets. Heck, you might even luck out with a gold ring. ;)

I was finding a lot of nails etc. then decided to go to a local lake swimming place and searched the sand and started learning the sounds and made a few finds. The one suggestion I would give you is to carry a sand scoop (cat litter scoop) it will save you some time and give you better accuracy with the sounds, if in sand! Don't give up remember, Charles Garrett said it takes about 10-hours to learn the beeps and 100-hours to get proficient.

I think i have figgured it out a little. I found standing liberty, 3 mercury dimes, silver dime, silver quarter, bunch of pennies, 7 quarters,3 wheat pennies. Thanks so much for yall help. I tryed to upload a pic but it says the file to big can't upload it

Nice Hunt, Harvey!! Sounds like you've got that puppy figured out all right!!

I have had my ACE 250 every since they first came out. I have found that the biggest problem for beginners is having the sensitivity set too high. Mine always seems to run better in the 3 or 4 notch range than a higher setting. A lower setting also cuts down on a lot ot the noise and false signals. And by all means do "plant" a coin garden. Don't stick to just coins however, bury some artifacts and even some trash so you will be able to determine the difference in the sounds. And use the garden to practice on when you can't get out to hunt. Bury the "treasures" at different depths and make yourself a good grid map so you can tell what your coil is covering. I number all my planted goodies and drive a golf tee in the ground on top of them. Then I log the numbers into a small tablet so I know what it is that is making the noise. For instance, #1 a silver quarter at 6", #2 a clad dime at 4", #3 a wheat penny at 5", etc, etc. It's a great help to a newbie and also to an old timer just as a reminder. I like to go out a day or so before a real hunt and run my course just to be sure everything is working properly. Onus

you well have a new detector in no time i will keep my ace 250 for one more year i hope this year is going to be good i had anuff clad and rings and sliver to get me the at pro but xmass got it all grand kids are happy
