New Vaquero owner-help please....

MXTerer

New member
Just received my new Vaquero and have some questions. I have been a Tejon owner for several years so maybe I'm trying to compare the two.
First is a question about sensitivity. I can turn it wide open past the red with no problems without the machine becoming unstable. not a sound. Is this normal on the Vaquero?
Second is the supertuning. I can only turn the threshold to 3 oclock before the signals start breaking up. A dime reads smooth until I pass 3 oclock then it sounds like you are on the edge of metal or something. How does yours compare?

I have a Cibola; very similar but not identical to the Vaquero. I also have a Tejon.

Cibola can run wide open sensitivity in a lot of the ground I hunt but not all. Not sure what type of ground conditions you have; if the ground is fairly mild, would expect what you describe. The Tejon gets much more chatty on high sensitivity settings.

Super tuned, if the dime is on the ground, try raising the coil a bit and see if it smooths out. Very close to targets with high gain and threshold settings, I get beeps on both edges of the coil and sometimes various echo or broken sounds in the middle of the coil sweep over the target.

Also, make sure you are ground balanced in a target and iron free area. Use all-metal to find a clear area for ground balancing and then try the dime set on that clear area.

You have purchased one of the best machines tesoro makes. You can hunt tot lots, prospect,or coin shoot & the vaquero does it all.I've always said it's the most versitile machine in tesoro's lineup today. You must be in very clean ground to be able to run deep into the red zone with no falsing. If i run my sensitivity past 10 in trash, i get some chirping. One of the most critical points of the vaquero i have found is ground balance.Although very easy to do ,it has to be right.I usually run threshold where the o is in the word tesoro& sensitivity just a little past 10 barely into the red zone & don't have any problems at all.Once you get the basics down, you're going to love the vaquero.HH Pat

Well, in a few weeks, I'll be able to help you MXTer. I have just purchased a Vaquero from Pat (pocahontas). I am actually waiting on the mail to deliver and then I'll
be out using it - and I'll try to answer your questions. In the meantime, Pat's advice sounds reasonable to me - I'm sure his experience with the vaq will help you.

I have found a Vaquero with standard coil and the 5.75 wide scan coil. It is in like new condition. I am debating between getting a new Minelab X-terra 705 or this used Vaquero. I currenly own a Whites Eagle Spectrum very similar to XLT. Many reason I am looking to trade up is my Whites lacks depth compared to both the minelab and Vaguero. Also the high freq on the Vaquero makes it more versitle in that it can see smaller gold then my Whites if I am so inclined.

I understand there is a big difference but I am finding the more I use a detector the less I look at the display and the more I listen to the sounds. Do not get me wrong a display is nice but most of the time the sound tells me more about iffy targets. No keep in mind I am still wet behind the ears when it comes to detecting but that is my observation. I should also add I live in Colorado that has lots of hot rocks highly mineralized ground.

Any thoughts on my choices and since this is a Tesoro Forum thoughts on Vaquero.

Thanks

Bryanna
