New User - X-Terra 305 - Sydney, AU

Out of Order

New member
Hi all,

I'm a new user to this forum and to metal detecting.

After reading a few reviews and comments about metal detectors, i've decided to purchase the x-terra 305. For me the 305 has all the bells and whistle I need, aswell as good local support.

Did my first field detecting on the weekend, first stop my BACKYARD.. got a few positive and negative signal (all metal mode), but only dug shallow hits has I didn't want to dig up the lawn too much.

The first hit ID'd @12 with 2bar depth (all metal mode).. dug a little with spade, then use hands to seek target - BIG MISTAKE- cut my bloody finger on piece of beer can aluminium. (I will now wear gloves!!) LOL!

First experience not exactly welcoming... but i'm keen. Hope to speak to other x-terra 305 users.

later.

What do they say about the 305 for gold nuggets? I'm so curious about it. I'm going to buy an xterra in a about a month. I want to buy a 305 with the elliptical coil. Let me know....

Hi Jess,

I guess most detectors with HF coils can be used to seek out gold nuggets big or small, including the 305.. BUT.. to minimise digging false targets all day a more refined 'specialised' machine that can neutralise highly mineralised grounds would be more practical, like the X-Terra 705.

But if you think outside the box, and treat local Beaches as Gold Fields then you may get a higher returns ie gold rings, gold jewelry, pirate treasure chest filled with gold coins.

I know the 705 is twice the cost of a 305.. but if you plan to frequent gold fields, then the 705 is a better investment.. the 305 is capable but more work for you.

Welcome to the forum. Check out the faq faq post at top of page it has alot of information about all detectors.

OoO,

welcome mate.
Backyards rubbish is normal, a lot of builders bury their trash instead of paying to have it taken away.
You will love the Xterra and you have rich pickings in a big city like Sydney...relic sites, beaches, parks and playing fields.
I think you will find that most minus signals will be rusty iron.
Loooking forward to seeing your future progression and finds.

I use 2 diggers. 1 for digging and a plastic one for running the dirt past the coil. I have got a pinpointer now (Garrett) and still use my plastic digger. Basicly a big ol nylon spoon.

If that 305 will run the 18.75 coils it will hunt gold. Probably not as deep as the 70/705. D.T. claims the 10.5 MF DD hits nuggets in the 1 to 2 oz range real well on the 705.

Welcome aboard.
You have a great little detector in the 305. I had the 30 for 3 years and really enjoyed it. Got a 70 now, but would be just as happy with the 305. I got to hunt down your way over Christmas. 10 days and $333 later, I'm envious of how productive a place you have down there.:detecting:

Hi Jess.
I hope I don't burst your bubble too much here, but unfortunately, the 305 is a poor choice for gold hunting. It just isn't sensitive enough. Yeah it will hit bits that are bigger than a gram, if they are within a couple of inches of the coil, but the smaller more common nuggets will be missed. Try it out will some of the smallest lead sinker you can find. This will give you some idea of how small a piece of gold you can find with it. The prospecting mode on the 70/705 is far more sensitive.

Welcome to the site! Glad to have you on! Congrats on the new MD and sorry to hear about the finger, Beale.

Yeah, about half a glove box full. I mostly ignored 5's and 10's this time and it seemed to be more productive.
Speaking of glove boxes. I talked to a work mate quite a few years back. He told me that he used to keep all his spare change in the glove box of his Kingswood ute. He never worried about locking his car and found that from time to time, when he got up in the morning and jumped in the car to go to work, he found that the money was taken. After that, he placed a rat trap in the glove box. One morning he came out and found a big dent in his door!:nono:
