New Tracker IV - Woot!

Sup Everyone!

I'm completely new to detecting and my buddy Eric turned me onto the hobby a few months ago. I finally purchased my Tracker IV last night and I cannot wait to get out and start hunting. I'll happily take any advice because i'm such a noob :)

GL to all!

Hey there,

I started metal detecting last year and the Tracker IV was my first machine. I absolutely loved this machine and had great success with it. My best find from 2011 was a 1957 half crown. I just recently upgraded to a Bounty Hunter Discovery 3300 which I'm excited to finally use this spring. If I could make a suggestion, buy yourself a pinpointer. My first one was a Bounty Hunter pinpointer ($50 on eBay) I'll be using a Garrett pro pinpointer this year. Luck for me both my new machine and pinpointer were both gifts.

I wish you great success, happy hunting :)

Take care,
Kevin

The Tracker IV is a good detector for sure. Learn it well and you
won't be disappointed. Do a search using "Tracker 4" on the Bounty
Hunter forum for all dates. This will give you all kinds of information
and tips. Take it one step at a time so it doesn't overwhelm you.
You have a good detector that will get the job done once you understand
what it is telling you. Until then you will be "paying your dues" I like to
call it. Same for any new detector I have ever used. At first the detector
is telling you things you don't understand but in time it will all start to
click. Good hunting to you !

For what it's worth: The manual doesn't tell you how to set up the tones, so this is an oldie that started years ago. When in tones mode, start rotating the disc control until a nickel just gives a smooth low tone and you're set. Nickels/large foil will now give a low tone, tabs (except for the sta-tab) a mixed tone, and clad a high tone. You get a little more depth in standard disc. and I always hunt with it at minimum. All metal will find every piece or iron in the neighborhood. Run the sensitivity at 2/3rds max at least. Max will pick up lots of large targets like an aluminum can at a foot. Since you are new, I better tell you that a sta-tab is the gosh-awful square tab that registers as a nickel on all machines.:veryangry: For the most part signals will have a repeatable tone, but there are a few trash items/deep targets that will give an "iffy" signal. You will have fun learning. Don't be surprised to find a high tone and it's a coin beneath a tab-it's good at this.

Hello and Welcome to the forum, you're gonna find out that's a great detector u got there.

Congrats and Happy Hunting.

Thanks for the advice everyone! If all goes well i'll be out on my first hunt Sunday...my backyard! My friend told me it's an older neighborhood and I know that the house was built in 1914 so we'll see what turns up :)

I'll post my finds after the weekend!

Took the T4 out for a spin this past weekend right in my backyard. The ground is pretty trashy and I was getting a lot of false signals from hot rocks. Can anyone offer advice on how to tune those out? And Slingshot thanks for the advice, I have my tones set up the way you described and although I haven't found any coins yet I can tell that it will work to my advantage :)
