New to water detecting.

I just purchased a White's Surfmaster PI Pro detector and thought that I would give water detecting a try. This is all new to me and I was hoping that maybe I could get some good tips from some of you water detecting fellows. This machine seems pretty simple enough to operate and I believe it's a pretty much turn on and go machine, but any tips would be greatly appreciated for beach and shallow water hunting. Up until now I have been a land hunter and use a Minelab XS which I have done quite well with, but after seeing what a couple of other fellows have done water detecting I thought I would give it a try. I know of some old swimming holes and hopefully if the mud and silt isn't too deep I might just find some interesting stuff. Thanks for any tips anyone might want to share with me. HH.

Hi Eddie

I also own a PI PRO and you're correct its very easy to use and its deep... I only use mine in the wet.. 90% of my detecting is done in the water where there is less trash.. I try and look for deep water troughs where the bottom make up is gravel and shell's VS sand and seem to have great success in these area's. I'll also hunt behind sand that has been pushed towards shore.. Alot of waterhunters don't like hunting in the rocks like I do and I find quite a bit of old gold in these area's.

I do detect wet sand now and then but I try and stay away from it because it tends to hold a lot of junk which our PI's love lol..

Don't hunt the dry sand unless you don't mind digging up a tiny staple down a foot, I use my VLF machine for the dry.

Thanks for the info Craig. Like I said, this is all new territory for me, but I look forward to the challenge and hope to find some nice stuff one of these days. I really want to find some of the old lake swimming holes, but I will hit the beaches here also. I was camping down in Oregon last summer and saw a couple of fellows out there on the beach at night detecting. I guess they avoid the crowds and don't like people bugging them.....:) Thanks again and HH.

Detecting freshwater lakes is awfully hard with a PI.. I do it but I don't like it.. Too much iron and you would be better off hunting freshwater with the likes of a BeachHunterID or Excalibur. :)

now the pi is ok if u live in a trash free zone AND IF U DO, MAN IT WILL BE A KILLER MACHINE and your finds will be great.

if not, u will loose to much valuable time digging junk

i had a pi once - look at me now and from holes like this

good luck and keep us posted

Nice picture there GraveDigger..........:) I doubt that I live in a trash free zone, but since I haven't been out yet with my PI then only time will tell. Looking forward to seeing how well this machine will do. You did fill in that crater that you dug didn't you?.....:) HH.

Thanks Craig. I was thinking about the Excalibur, but ended up with the PI. I guess if the lakes have too much iron then I will just have to concentrate more on the salt water beaches. Thanks again and HH.

u do not have to worry about it, it is a great machine for the buck, probably the best detector around for the price and it will find some nice tickets and some nice junk also.

but like i said, u have the best machine already for the beach

u just need one of these for it

I have read the preceding posts here and I ask, What prompted this post? I can't figure it out. Is there some deleted insult to females or what?
