New to Treasure Hunting/Metal Detecting

I am new to this and would like a little advice from all you good people. I have used a "Radio Shack" brand metal detector (I know, not a good choice) years ago and found it to be very enjoyable, however, not very rewarding. I am in the market and looking to purchase the White's Spectra V3, my question is; Would it be wise for someone with no experience in metal detecting (me) to purchase such a high-end machine or start out using something a little more "lower-end" to learn the basics and then move up?

I am 57 and my local dealer tried to sell me a DFX. at that time i wasn't ready for all the many settings it had.So i got an MXT and i am happy with it. Now that i can ride this two wheeler (MXT) without falling over.I am ready to get a Spectra V3 to add to my arsenal. I just have to wait to gather enough funds to get one LOL. If you really want to get into serious detecting by jumping in with both feet,,,the V3 is the way to go. If you want to "Sample the waters" and see if you want to invest that much money,,I would start out with a M6 or MXT before getting into the higher money detectors.....Tom

That is the advise I give too Tom. Since David is not completely new to the hobby, I would suggest buying the best detector you can afford. There is nothing wrong with getting started with the Radio Shack, Bounty Hunter detectors, many of us have roots there. The V3 is is ready to use right out of the box David, expecting great results even for the novice with almost unlimited room for tweaking and modification.

Welcome to the forum David.

David welcome to the forum i just joined the forum a couple of days ago my self !! i m new to the hobby to and i have very close friend that's been in the hobby for 15 years and he recommended me to start with the whites prizm 3 to see if I'm really going to get into the hobby or not the prizm 3 are only 249.00 and that's not bad for a new toy to test the waters with and the wife ain't going to kill you if you don't get into it if the hobby isn't for you !! and then i would go to a v3 I'm in the process of really getting to know my prizm right and at the same time socking money away for a whites xlt so I'm enjoying the hobby and at the same time saving for the better unit so when time comes ill have to units so if the wife wants to get into it after she See's what I'm making and or a friend wants to get into hobby i have a second unit he or she can use to hunt together that's just my advice !! but welcome to forum !! David
