Bought a detector tuesday after work, got to know it in the backyard for about 2 hours
Wed. I got the front yard, thur i worked too late and fri. I got off work an hour early and stayed on Post and hunted around some WWII era buildings.

My finds so far:
Backyard: 1 1977 penny, 2 pull tabs, 1 cable adjuster for a motorcycle and a piece of aluminum can
Front yard: 1 8 inch piece of aluminum flashing, 1 pull tab and a nail
On Post: 3 pull tabs, 4 pieces of aluminum can, 1 whole aluminum can, 5 fired .223 blanks, 6 unfired .223 blanks and 2 pennies, 1993 & 1997.

I know during WWII, the MT Guardsmen were poor, but I expected to find at least one coin form that time period. I realize that in such a short time, I haven't scratched the surface of this hobby, but I can honestly say, I don't know what I am doing out there. Anybody know of some recommended reading that would help me on my way?

It seems you're doing ok. You are finding stuff just not any old coins at that site yet. Be patient, they will come. It would help to know what kind of detector you have to make any suggestions that will be of help to you.

It's a fisher F2. I guess what I meant was some reading on MD in general. Like what does "repeatable tone" mean? is it the exact same tone(and scale reading) every pass over the area (swing speed remaining the same) and the 90 degree swing too? Or do they mean any tone? Or is the only way to learn just to go out and swing and dig?

hi rexer. welcome to a great forum and hobby. the f2 is a good starter model, and that's about as much as i know about it. everything you found so far were repeatable signals-otherwise, you'd have had a hard time finding them, and would involve some techniques you probably don't know about yet. build yourself a simple "test garden" with these items: a pulltab, a penny thru quarter, iron nail, a cheap ring, a silver dime or quarter if you have one, and maybe even a gold ring. bury these all at different depths and space them out. nothing deeper than 4" for now. as you get better, you can go deeper. you will notice right away that your machine reacts differently to different metals and at different depths. sensitivity gives depth; discrimination is a measured scale for metals rejection. taking the time now to learn about your machine and what it's capable of will pay off later. you won't always find the good everytime you go out. just be patient and take your time with the f2; metal detectors are not good liars. it will do you well to check out the fisher users forum on here. good luck, and hh,

The F2 has a quick target response. This means it completes each beep cycle very fast. So you can locate a good target next to a bad one easier than a slower responding detector. When you get in an area where there are lots of beeping going on. Slow your sweep speed way down like 2 seconds per foot of coil travel. Then this will allow you to pick good targets among iron targets. A repeatable target is simply a target that generates a beep in both directions with about 4 beeps in a row or more. Don't worry too much about the numeric read out jumping around. Even a good coin hit in the ground may jump around. Your F2 can pinpoint without using the PP button. Just slow your sweep down and X the target centering the target left and right then up and down.
